Cal U rolls to win at Bloomsburg, 80-45

Vulcans finish with plus-15 rebounding advantage, score 31 points off turnovers

BLOOMSBURG, Pa. (Dec. 18) – The No. 2 Vulcans allowed just two first-half field goals and mounted a 20-0 run before halftime on Sunday afternoon to cruise to an 80-45 victory at Bloomsburg in non-conference play.

With the win, the California University of Pennsylvania women's basketball team improves to 11-0 overall. The Vulcans have now won all but one of their games this season by at least 15 points, including five victories by over 30 points. Meanwhile, the Huskies fall to 1-8 on the campaign under first-year head coach Alison Tagliaferri, who spent the previous four seasons as head coach at Mansfield.

Junior forward Seairra Barrett (Center Twp., Pa./Central Valley) led the team in scoring with 16 points after going 8-of-11 from the field. She also tallied five rebounds, two assists and three steals while playing only 20 minutes due to foul trouble. The reigning Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West Defensive Athlete of the Year, Barrett has paced the team in scoring four times in her last eight games over the last month.

Senior Miki Glenn (Bridgeport, W.Va./Bridgeport) finished with 14 points behind eight-of-eight from the free-throw line. She also collected four rebounds, six assists and five steals against the Huskies. Junior Shatara Parsons (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) also scored 15 points and added five rebounds and three steals in the victory.

Sophomore Abbey Sporio (Elizabeth, Pa./Elizabeth Forward) and freshman DJ Hahn (Warren, Pa./Warren) both added eight points off the bench, while redshirt senior Brittany Nelson (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin East) led the team with seven rebounds (three offensive).

Both teams struggled from the floor in the opening minutes of the game, going a combined 4-for-16 with Cal U holding an 8-4 lead with 4:19 left in the first quarter. The Vulcans then rallied off a dominating 20-0 run over the next five minutes to take a 28-4 lead with 9:20 remaining before halftime. During the rally, Cal U shot eight-of-nine from the floor with Barrett and Glenn combining for 14 points. The Huskies made their initial field goal of the game at the 7:31-mark in the second quarter, as they missed their opening 12 shots. Hahn then scored the next eight points for the Vulcans to stretch the lead to 36-7 with 4:20 left in the second quarter. Cal U eventually led by as many as 31 points, 44-13, in the first half before taking a 44-15 lead at the break.

The Vulcans started the third quarter on a 9-3 run to stretch their lead to 53-18 on a jumper by Barrett with 7:33 left in the quarter. Bloomsburg countered with nine-straight points to work the deficit down to 53-27 at the 5:53-mark before Cal U answered with seven-consecutive points in 75 seconds to push the lead to 60-27 on a three-pointer by Sporio with 4:38 remaining in the third quarter. The Huskies eventually trailed by as few as 26 points, 66-40, with 9:23 left in the game, however, Cal U closed the game on a 12-4 run to finish with an 80-45 victory.

Cal U finished the game shooting 45.7 percent (32-of-70) from the floor and converted 80.0 percent (12-of-15) from the free-throw line. In comparison, Bloomsburg posted a .283 field-goal percentage (13-of-46) after making just two field goals in the first half. The Vulcans held a 45-30 rebounding advantage behind 17 offensive rebounds and forced 27 turnovers, which were converted into 31 points.

Senior Morgan Klunk was the lone player for Bloomsburg to score in double-digits, finishing with 13 points behind seven-of-nine from the free-throw line. Freshman Taylor Montana led the team with seven rebounds and also registered four blocks in the loss.

The Vulcans are idle for almost two weeks before opening PSAC West play by traveling to Edinboro on Dec. 30 at 5:30 p.m.
