Cal U collects sweep at Millersville, 3-0

Barrett, Hayes combine for 31 kills while hitting at a .528 clip against Marauders

MILLERSVILLE, Pa. (Nov. 4) – The Vulcans posted a 3-0 win (25-21, 25-18, 25-16) over Millersville in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Crossover action on Friday night.

With the victory, the California University of Pennsylvania women's team improve to 18-7 overall behind a 10-4 mark in league play. Meanwhile, the Marauders fall to 9-16 this season with a 5-9 record in conference action.

Senior Danielle Hayes (Erie, Pa./McDowell) led the team with 19 kills on a .471 hitting percentage while also adding 11 digs for her 12th kill/dig double-double of the year. Sophomore Seairra Barrett (Center Twp., Pa./Central Valley) posted 12 kills while hitting at a staggering .632 clip and junior Ashley Leto (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) added six kills. Senior Megan Litoborski (Lemont, Ill./Lemont) guided the offense with 40 assists and also collected 13 digs.

Sophomore Bayleana Sowers (Mt. Wolf, Pa./Northeastern) paced the team with 18 digs and Barrett controlled the net with three blocks. Hayes and Leto recorded four and three service aces, respectively, against Millersville.

Cal U rallied off seven of the eight points early in the first set to take an 8-3 lead. Following a point by the Marauders, the Vulcans took five of the next eight points to take a 13-7 advantage on a kill by Barrett. Millersville went on a 4-1 run to trim the lead to 14-11 before Cal U won seven of the next nine points to extend its lead to 21-13 on a service ace from Hayes. The Marauders won seven of the next nine points to cut the deficit to 23-20. Following a timeout, Cal U took two of the final three points for a 25-21 victory.

In the second set, the Vulcans raced out to a 10-1 early lead after a service ace by Leto. Following a timeout, Millersville went on an 8-3 run to trim the deficit to 13-9. The teams traded points to make it 18-14 in favor of the Vulcans. Cal U then scored back-to-back points to make it 20-14 on a service ace by Hayes before Millersville rallied for three-unanswered points to cut the lead to 20-17. The Vulcans scored five of the final six points to earn a 25-18 win following consecutive kills by Leto.

Cal U won the third set behind a .406 hitting percentage to complete the match victory. The Marauders jumped out to a 3-0 lead before the Vulcans went on an 8-1 run to take an 8-4 lead on an attacking error. Following a timeout, Millersville made it 8-5 before Cal U took six of the next eight points to extend the lead to 14-7 on a block assist by Barrett and Leto. The Marauders scored four-unanswered points to cut the lead to 14-11 before the teams traded 3-0 runs to make the score 17-14 in favor of the Vulcans. A kill by Barrett started a string of back-to-back points to give Cal U a 19-14 lead. The Marauders then responded with consecutive points to trim the deficit to 19-17. Cal U closed the match by winning the final six points, including four via kill, of the match to earn a 25-16 victory.

The Vulcans continue their weekend road trip tomorrow, Saturday, Nov. 5, when they face Shippensburg at 1 p.m.
