ELKINS, W.Va. (Nov. 30) – The Vulcans were unable to overcome 35 points by senior Kevin Bracy-Davis on Wednesday night, as they suffered a 79-64 loss at Davis & Elkins in non-conference play.
With the loss, the California University of Pennsylvania men's basketball team falls to 2-5 overall while playing its first game since before Thanksgiving weekend. Meanwhile, D&E improves to 1-6 this season after losing three of its last four games by a combined 10 points.
Junior forward
Tony Richardson (Sterling, Va./Dominion) tied his career high and led the team with 17 points after going 6-of-11 from the field. He also collected a team-high eight rebounds (five offensive) while playing 22 minutes off the bench on Wednesday.
Fellow junior
Daniel Sapp (Streetsboro, Ohio/Streetsboro) posted 13 points, seven rebounds and three assists, while classmate
Luka Andjusic (Belgrade, Serbia/Borislav Petrov Braca) finished with 11 points and five rebounds against the Senators. Junior
Nick Miller (Industry, Pa./Western Beaver) scored nine points behind three three-pointers and registered a team-leading five assists.
D&E started the game on a 13-2 run over the opening four-plus minutes before Richardson scored five-straight points to cut the deficit to 13-7 with 14:13 left in the first half. The Senators answered with a 6-1 run over the next 70 seconds to stretch the lead back to 11 points at 19-8 with 13:03 remaining before halftime. Cal U trimmed the deficit to single digits at 21-12 before D&E countered with nine-straight points to extend the lead to 33-15 with 8:49 left in the first half. The Vulcans eventually worked the deficit down to 39-27 at the break after Sapp made a three-pointer with less than 15 seconds left to play.
The Vulcans mounted a 9-4 run early in the second half to cut the deficit to 48-41 on a three-pointer by Andjusic before the Senators later countered with eight-straight points to stretch the lead to 59-44 with 11:36 remaining. D&E eventually led by as many 17 points multiple times over the final nine minutes, as Cal U was only able to trim the deficit to 12 points, 71-59, with 5:35 left to play.
Cal U shot a season-low 31.3 percent (21-of-67) from the floor while going just 27.8 percent (10-of-36) from beyond the arc. Meanwhile, D&E posted a .469 field-goal percentage (30-of-64) in the victory. The Senators held a sizeable 53-36 rebounding advantage, while the Vulcans posted an 18-5 edge in points off turnovers.
Bracy-Davis, who ranked second in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) in scoring last year, scored 35 points after going 12-of-15 from the field and seven-of-seven from the free-throw line. He also added six rebounds, three assists, three blocks and three steals in 28 minutes. Junior Rickenjee Bellevue registered a game-high 16 rebounds, as Bracy-Davis was the only Senator to score in double-digits.
The Vulcans return to action this weekend when they host Cheyney in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Crossover play on Saturday, Dec. 3, at 3 p.m.
