CALIFORNIA (Nov. 22) – Senior
Miki Glenn (Bridgeport, W.Va./Bridgeport) and junior
Seairra Barrett (Center Twp., Pa./Central Valley) combined for nearly 50 points on Tuesday evening, as the No. 5 Vulcans claimed a 93-69 victory against Ohio Dominican in their home-opener at the Convocation Center.
With the win, the California University of Pennsylvania women's basketball team improves to 6-0 overall while averaging 86.7 points per game. Meanwhile, Ohio Dominican falls to 3-2 this season with both of its losses coming against top-25 teams, as it suffered an 82-81 overtime loss at then-No. 9 Bellarmine (Ky.) on Saturday.
Glenn scored a game-high 28 points after shooting 8-of-16 from the field and 11-of-12 from the free-throw line. She also led the team with eight rebounds, six assists and five steals while playing all 40 minutes. Glenn has now scored at least 20 points in four of six games this season and ranks third in the PSAC in scoring at 19.3 points per game.
Barrett finished with 20 points (12 second half) behind 10-of-14 from the floor and added three rebounds, three assists and three steals. Senior
Lana Doran (Northamptonshire, England/Barking Abbey) posted 16 points, four rebounds, three assist and three steals, while sophomore
Abbey Sporio (Elizabeth, Pa./Elizabeth Forward) added 10 points and five rebounds off the bench. Junior
Shatara Parsons (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) finished with seven points and six rebounds after missing the last three games.
The Panthers held the early lead behind a pair of three-pointers before the Vulcans scored 11-unanswerered points to take a 15-6 lead after Glenn converted a three-point play with 5:38 left in the first quarter. ODU then scored six-straight points to trim the deficit to 15-12 before Cal U later closed the quarter on a 9-0 run to take a 26-14 lead. The Vulcans stretched the lead to 32-17 on a pair of free-throws by Sporio with 8:19 left before halftime. ODU answered by closing the half on a 20-9 run to cut the deficit to 41-37 at the break. During the run, the Vulcans were limited to just 4-of-13 shooting from the floor, while the Panthers made seven-of-eight from the field and six-of-seven from the free-throw line.
ODU scored the opening basket of the third quarter to trim the deficit to 41-39 before Cal U responded with a 13-4 rally to stretch the lead to 54-44 on a pair of free-throws by Glenn with 5:47 left in the quarter. The Vulcans later posted a 14-2 run behind 11-of-12 from the charity stripe over four-plus minutes to extend the lead to 75-51 with 45 seconds remaining in the third quarter. The Panthers countered with eight-straight points to cut the deficit to 75-59 with 7:36 left in the game. Cal U responded with a 10-4 rally to take an 85-63 lead at the 3:47-mark before leading by as many 24 points later in the game.
The Vulcans finished the game shooting 43.0 percent (34-of-79) from the field and converted 88.9 percent (24-of-27) from the free-throw line. Meanwhile, the Panthers made 44.8 percent (26-of-58) from the floor and 86.7 percent (13-of-15) from the charity stripe. ODU out-rebounded Cal U by a 46-33 margin, while the Vulcans forced 31 turnovers and only committed six turnovers in the win.
Senior Lauren Bates led the Panthers with 14 points after going 5-of-14 from the floor. She also posted five rebounds, six assists, two blocks and three steals in 29 minutes. Junior Darian Rose finished with 12 points and senior Madi Ritttinger scored 10 points in the loss.
Cal U returns to action on Sunday, Nov. 27, when it travels to face Ursuline in Pepper Pike, Ohio, at 2 p.m.
