KUTZTOWN, Pa. (Nov. 19) – Behind a career-high 27 points from junior forward
Seairra Barrett (Center Twp., Pa./Central Valley), the No. 8 Vulcans earned a 74-52 victory at Kutztown on Saturday afternoon to open Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Crossover action.
With the win, the California University of Pennsylvania women's basketball team improves to 4-0 overall while averaging 88.5 points per game this season. Meanwhile, Kutztown falls to 1-2 this year after winning its season-opener.
Barrett scored 27 points on 13-of-23 from the floor and added nine rebounds (four offensive) and three assists. In the second half on Saturday, she finished with 17 points after shooting 8-of-14 from the field. Barrett is averaging 21.7 points and 7.3 rebounds per game this season while making 56.6 percent (30-of-53) from the floor.
Sophomore guard
Abbey Sporio (Elizabeth, Pa./Elizabeth Forward) added a career-high 13 points off the bench. She made four-of-six from the field and five-of-seven from the free-throw line. Sporio also collected four assists and three steals in 22 minutes. Senior
Precious Martin (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) finished with 11 points, four rebounds, four assists and four steals against the Golden Bears. Fellow senior
Miki Glenn (Bridgeport, W.Va./Bridgeport) totaled 10 points, seven rebounds, eight assists and four steals while playing 38 minutes.
The Golden Bears scored seven-straight points midway through the first quarter to take a 13-7 lead. The teams then traded baskets before Cal U countered with a 9-0 run to take an 18-15 lead with 1:38 left in the quarter. Kutztown countered with an 8-4 rally over four-plus minutes to reclaim the lead at 23-22 with 7:34 remaining before halftime. The Vulcans then made a pair of unanswered baskets to take a 27-23 lead on a three-pointer by Glenn at the 4:45-mark in the second quarter. Kutztown responded with seven-consecutive points to reclaim the lead at 30-27 with 2:55 left before halftime. The Vulcans later scored the last six points of the second quarter to take a 35-32 lead at the break.
Cal U recorded the opening nine points of the third quarter to extend its lead to 44-32 on a tip-in by Barrett with 4:42 remaining. After a basket by the Golden Bears, the Vulcans answered with six-straight points to take a 50-34 lead with 2:54 left in the quarter. Kutztown countered with a 7-1 run to trim the deficit to 51-41 with 1:05 remaining in the third quarter. Cal U responded with six-straight points to extend its lead back to 16 points at 57-41 following a three-pointer by senior
Lana Doran (Northamptonshire, England/Barking Abbey) with 8:49 left in the game. The Golden Bears worked the deficit down to 59-47 with 7:35 remaining before the Vulcans mounted a 13-2 run, including seven points by Barrett, over five-plus minutes to stretch its lead to 72-49 at the 2:03-mark.
The Vulcans shot nearly 50 percent in the second half and finished the game shooting 43.5 percent (30-of-69) from the floor. Cal U also converted 57.9 percent (11-of-19) from the free-throw line. In comparison, the Golden Bears made only five shots after halftime and shot 37.5 percent (18-of-48) for the game. Kutztown posted a slim 37-35 rebounding advantage, while Cal U scored 44 points from inside the paint. The Vulcans tallied 39 points off turnovers in the victory.
Redshirt sophomore Kalee Fuegel was the only Golden Bear to score in double-digits, finishing with 13 points on six-of-seven from the floor. Senior Kelsey Watson led the team with nine rebounds.
Cal U continues its weekend road trip tomorrow, Sunday, Nov. 20, when it travels to face Mansfield at 1 p.m.
