Cal U falls to Edinboro in crossover play, 3-1

Vulcans record season-high 13 blocks, commit 26 attack errors in the loss

CALIFORNIA (Oct. 7) – Facing the team with the longest winningest streak in the league, the Vulcans suffered a 3-1 loss (25-21, 25-21, 19-25, 25-23) to Edinboro in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Crossover play at the Convocation Center on Friday night.

With the loss, the California University of Pennsylvania volleyball team falls to 12-4 overall and 4-1 in league play. Meanwhile, Edinboro extends its winning streak to 12 matches and improves to 12-4 overall with a 5-0 mark in conference action.

Senior Danielle Hayes (Erie, Pa./McDowell) recorded a team-high 17 kills and sophomore Seairra Barrett (Central Twp., Pa/Central Valley) finished 11 kills. Fellow sophomore Emily Bucklin (Marysville, Ohio/Marysville) added eight kills in the loss. Senior Megan Litoborski (Lemont, Ill/Lemont) directed the offense with 42 assists and registered 19 digs for her fifth assist/dig double-double of the year. Sophomore Bayleana Sowers (Mt. Wolf, Pa./Northeastern) paced the team with 20 digs against the Fighting Scots and junior Ashley Leto (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) collected 18 digs. Barrett and Bucklin controlled the net, as each ttallied six blocks.

In the first set, Edinboro opened play by scoring the initial two points before Cal U took three of the next four to even the score at 3-3. A service error led to a 4-1 run by Edinboro to claim a 7-4 advantage. The Vulcans scored two-unanswered points before Edinboro went on a 5-2 run to increase its lead to 12-8. Cal U took seven of the next nine points to take its first lead of the match at 15-14. Edinboro took four of the next seven points to tie the score at 18-18. Edinboro closed out the first set by winning seven of the final 10 points to claim a 25-21 victory.

The Vulcans took a 5-2 lead in the second set before the Fighting Scots scored two-straight points to cut the deficit to 5-4. An attack error lead to the Vulcans taking three of the next five points to extend their lead to 8-6. Edinboro went on a 5-1 run to take an 11-9 lead before Cal U took eight of the next 10 points to hold a 17-13 advantage. The Fighting Scots went on a 7-2 run to take a 20-19 lead before the Vulcans evened the score on a kill by Barrett. Edinboro scored five of the final six points to earn a 25-21 win in the second set.

Cal U raced out to an 8-2 lead in the third set before Edinboro went on a 4-1 run to trim the lead to 9-6. The Vulcans answered by taking four of the next six points to extend their lead to 13-8. The teams traded points until the score was 16-11 in favor of Cal U before Edinboro took five of the next seven points to cut the deficit to 18-16. Cal U scored seven of the final 10 points and claimed a 25-19 victory on a kill from Hayes.

In the fourth set, the Vulcans took an early 7-3 lead before the Fighting Scots took five of the next seven points to trim the lead to 9-8. Edinboro continued its rally by taking seven of the next 10 points to build a 14-12 advantage. The Vulcans tied the score at 14-14 before the Fighting Scots won six of the next eight points to take a 20-16 lead. The Vulcans answered by winning four of the next six points to cut the lead to 22-20. Edinboro took a 23-20 lead before the Vulcans scored three unanswered points to tie the set at 23=23. The Fighting Scots earned a 25-23 victory after two attack errors.

Cal U continues PSAC Crossover play against the Northwest Division tomorrow, Saturday, Oct. 8, when it hosts Slippery Rock at 1 p.m.
