Grant scores first career goal, Jayes records five saves in final home game

CALIFORNIA (Oct. 19) – The Vulcans scored a goal in the opening minutes on Wednesday night before battling to a 1-1 double-overtime tie against Pitt-Johnstown in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) action at the Phillipsburg Soccer Facility.

With the tie, the California University of Pennsylvania women's soccer team moves to 2-9-3 overall - all in league play. Meanwhile, UPJ now stands at 0-14-1 this season behind a 0-13-1 record in conference action.

The Vulcans took an early 1-0 lead in the fourth minute when junior Riann Grant (Scarborough, Ontario/Birchmount Park) scored her first career goal off a through ball from the middle by junior Kira Carberry (Odenton, Md./ Arundel). UPJ controlled possession for the majority of the second half and eventually tied the game at 1-1 at the 88:57-mark when Sam Bahorich recorded her first goal of the year off a pass inside the box from Kyra Watkins.

In the first overtime, freshman Luisa Holzapfel (Medellin, Colombia/Brashear (Pa.)) had a shot sail just over top of the net. Cal U tallied the only two shot attempts in the final overtime period.

Senior goalkeeper Meghan Jayes (New Albany, Ohio/ New Albany) recorded five saves, all in regulation, in her final game at Phillipsburg Soccer Facility. UPJ goalkeeper Leigh Appolonia finished with one save while playing all 110 minutes.

The Lady Cats finished the game with a 11-8 shot advantage and registered the game's only corner kick.

Cal U returns to action on Tuesday, Oct. 25, when it travels to face Gannon in Erie, Pennsylvania, at 6 p.m.
