Vulcans swept at Seton Hill in SW opener, 3-0

Hayes, Litoborski each record double-doubles in the loss

GREENSBURG, Pa. (Oct. 11) – The Vulcans suffered a 3-0 loss (25-17, 25-20, 25-22) at Seton Hill on Tuesday night while opening Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Southwest play.

With the loss, the California University of Pennsylvania volleyball team falls to 13-5 this season behind a 5-2 mark in league action. Meanwhile, Seton Hill improves to 14-5 overall with a 6-1 record in conference play.

Senior Danielle Hayes (Erie, Pa./McDowell) collected half of the team's kills on Tuesday, as she finished with 15 kills on a .234 hitting percentage. Sophomore Seairra Barrett (Center Twp., Pa./Central Valley) posted six kills, while junior Ashley Leto (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) and sophomore Lois van Schaik (Naarden, Netherlands/St. Vituscollege) each tallied four kills. Senior Megan Litoborski (Lemont, Ill./Lemont) guided the offense with 26 assists against the Griffins.

The trio of Hayes, Litoborski and sophomore Bayleana Sowers (Mt. Wolf, Pa./Northeastern) led the team with 10 digs, while Leto added eight digs. Hayes also collected three service aces and three blocks in the loss. Sophomore Emily Bucklin (Marysville, Ohio/Marysville) recorded five blocks at Seton Hill.

In the first set, the teams traded the opening points of the match before the Griffins mounted an 8-2 run to take a 13-6 lead. Cal U won six of the next eight points to cut the deficit to 15-12 on a kill by Leto. The teams traded runs of back-to-back points before the Griffins rallied with five-unanswered points to stretch the lead to 22-14 on a service ace. Cal U won the next three points to trim the deficit to 22-17 before Seton Hill claimed the next three points to earn a 25-17 win.

Cal U committed seven errors and posted a .028 hitting percentage in the second set. With the score tied at 4-4, the Vulcans won five of six points to take a 9-5 lead on an attacking error by the Griffins. The teams traded the next seven points before Cal U won back-to-back points to take a 14-9 lead on a kill by Hayes. After the teams traded four points, Seton Hill rallied off six-unanswered points to take a 17-16 lead before Cal U later tied the score at 20-20 on a service error. The Griffins then won five-straight points to claim a 25-20 victory.

Early in the third set, the Vulcans claimed five-unanswered points to take a 9-6 lead on block assist by Bucklin and Leto. The teams traded the next six points before Seton Hill won five-straight points to take a 14-12 lead before Cal U won back-to-back points to tie the score at 14-14. The Griffins countered by claiming six of the next seven points to take a 20-15 lead. Following a timeout, Cal U won four of six points to cut the deficit to 22-19 on a kill by Leto.  The teams traded the next six points before the Griffins won the set by a 25-22 count.

Cal U returns to league crossover play this weekend with back-to-back road matches in Erie, Pennsylvania, beginning on Friday, Oct. 14 against Gannon at 7 p.m.
