Shatara Parsons (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) set a career high with 30 points and classmate
Seairra Barrett (Center Twp., Pa./Central Valley) added 17 rebounds on Saturday evening, as the Vulcans earned a 77-57 win at Clarion in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West action.
With the victory, the California University of Pennsylvania women's basketball team improves to 14-5 overall and remains tied for first place in the divisional standings with a 12-4 mark. Meanwhile, Clarion falls to 7-15 this season behind a 7-9 record in league play.
Additionally, the win marked the 100th career victory for head coach
Jess Strom. She becomes just the third coach in program history to reach the milestone, and the first since
Darcie Vincent, who holds the school record with 212 wins. Strom boasts a 100-34 record and a .746 winning percentage in five seasons as head coach of the Vulcans.
Parsons finished with 30 points after shooting 12-of-14 from the floor and six-of-eight from the free-throw line. She also tallied six rebounds while playing 33 minutes on Saturday. Parsons has scored 45 points over the last two games after posting a combined 34 points in the previous four games.
Barrett recorded her 10th double-double of the season, as she posted 14 points and 17 rebounds (15 defensive) against the Golden Eagles. She shot five-of-nine from the field and also went four-of-eight from the charity stripe, while adding two assists and three steals in the win.
Junior guard
Miki Glenn (Bridgeport, W.Va./Bridgeport) totaled 13 points, four rebounds, five assists and two steals while playing all 40 minutes. Senior
Paige Wright (Fort Wayne, Ind./Northrop) posted nine points and five rebounds, while redshirt freshman
Morgan Jennings (Hollidaysburg, Pa./Hollidaysburg) finished with seven points and three steals off the bench.
The Vulcans scored the opening basket of the game before being held scoreless for over five minutes. However, Clarion was only able score five points during that span before Cal U closed the quarter on a 10-4 run to take a 12-9 lead on a three-pointer by freshman
Abbey Sporio (Elizabeth, Pa./Elizabeth Forward) with 20 seconds left. The Vulcans stretched the lead to 18-11 on a jumper by Parsons with 8:04 left in the first half before the Golden Eagles scored six-unanswered points to cut the deficit to 18-17. Cal U then responded with a 15-8 run to take a 33-25 lead on a three-pointer by Wright with 48 seconds left before the break. The teams traded layups in the final 30 seconds with the Vulcans holding a 35-27 lead at halftime.
Cal U scored seven-straight points, all by Parsons, early in the third quarter to take a 44-31 lead before Clarion trimmed the deficit down to 46-40 with 4:01 left in the quarter. The Vulcans countered with a 12-2 rally in just under two minutes to build a 58-42 lead on a layup by Parsons and later took a 58-44 lead at the end of the third quarter. The teams traded baskets early in the fourth quarter before Cal U mounted a 10-4 run to take a 70-50 lead on a layup by Barrett at the 4:15-mark. The Vulcans eventually stretched their lead to 21 points before finishing with the 77-57 victory.
The Vulcans shot over 50 percent in the second half and finished the game shooting 46.6 percent (27-of-58) from the floor. Cal U also made 71.4 percent (20-of-28) from the charity stripe after attempting 14 free-throws in each half. Meanwhile, the Golden Eagles shot at a 33.3 clip (23-of-69) from the field and 56.3 percent (9-of-16) from the free-throw line. Clarion held a slim 40-38 rebounding advantage, while Cal U scored 22 fastbreak points after forcing 16 turnovers.
Junior Delrika Jones-Carey and freshman Jordan Bekelja both led Clarion with 11 points and Jones-Carey added eight rebounds. Junior Jen Straw finished with 10 points and a team-high nine rebounds in the loss.
Cal U returns to action on Wednesday, Feb. 3, when it hosts Pitt-Johnstown at the Convocation Center with tipoff set for 5:30 p.m.
