Cal U falls at ESU on buzzer-beater, 74-73

Vulcans led by four points with 28 seconds left; Glenn, Parsons combine for 44 points

EAST STROUDSBURG, Pa. (Jan. 3) – Despite making six free-throws in the final minute to break a tie, the No. 13 Vulcans suffered a 74-73 loss following a three-point, buzzer-beater at East Stroudsburg in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Crossover action.

With the loss, the California University of Pennsylvania women's basketball team falls to 8-3 overall with a 6-2 mark in league play. The Vulcans have now lost back-to-back games for the first time since losing four-straight games in November 2013. Meanwhile, East Stroudsburg extends its winning streak to four games and improves to 5-7 this season behind a 3-5 record in conference action.

Junior Miki Glenn (Bridgeport, W.Va./Bridgeport) finished with 25 points on 8-of-19 from the floor and 8-of-11 from the free-throw line. She also posted five rebounds, five assists and three steals while playing all 40 minutes. Glenn has scored at least 20 points six times this year and has now reached the mark 10 times in her last 18 games dating back to last season.

Sophomore Shatara Parsons (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) posted 19 points (15 second half) on 7-of-11 shooting and added eight rebounds (four offensive), while redshirt freshman Morgan Jennings (Hollidaysburg, Pa./Hollidaysburg) totaled 11 points off the bench. Sophomore forward Seairra Barrett (Center Twp., Pa./Central Valley) led the team with 10 rebounds  and also established a career high with five assists despite battling foul trouble in the first half.

The Vulcans mounted a 14-0 run over six-plus minutes in the first quarter to build a 14-2 lead with 3:30 left in the quarter. During the span, the Warriors missed all seven of their shot attempts and committed six turnovers. East Stroudsburg later mounted a 7-3 rally over nearly four minutes to cut the deficit to 19-13 with 8:23 remaining in the second quarter.

Cal U then answered with a pair of free-throws by Glenn with 8:02 left before halftime prior to East Stroudsburg countering with a 9-2 run to trim the deficit to 23-22 at the 5:44-mark. The Vulcans mounted an 8-2 rally in just over one minute to take a 34-26 lead on a three-pointer by senior Paige Wright (Fort Wayne, Ind./Northrop), which was the last field goal of the first half for Cal U. The Warriors closed the second quarter by scoring six of the last seven points, as the Vulcans held a 35-32 lead at the break.

The Vulcans mounted an 11-2 rally capped by seven-straight points early in the third quarter to take a 46-36 lead on a layup by Parsons with 6:12 left in the quarter. East Stroudsburg snapped a four-minute scoreless drought at the 4:04-mark, which started an 11-4 run that cut the deficit to 50-47 at the start of the fourth quarter.

The Warriors eventually tied the score at 58-58 with 6:02 left in the game before the Vulcans scored six-unanswered points to take a 64-58 lead on a layup by Parsons at the 3:19-mark. The teams traded baskets before East Stroudsburg scored seven of eight points to tie the score at 67-67 with 1:11 remaining. Barrett and Glenn then each made two free-throws to give the Vulcans a 71-67 lead with 28 seconds left before the Warriors made a pair of free-throws with 20 seconds remaining. Glenn then made a free-throw with 15 seconds left before East Stroudsburg made a layup four seconds later. Glenn again converted one of two free-throws before senior Tyeca Reviere scored the game-winning, three-pointer at the buzzer.

The Vulcans finished the game shooting 38.0 percent (27-of-71) from the floor, including just 2-of-16 (12.5 percent) from beyond the arc. In comparison, the Warriors made 46.9 percent (30-of-64) from the field and held a 43-41 rebounding advantage. Cal U scored 23 points off turnovers and totaled 14 second-chance points in the loss.

ESU sophomore Imani Brown scored a game-high 28 points after shooting 12-of-17 from the floor and posted six rebounds. Junior Allison Howard registered a double-double of 16 points and 14 rebounds (five offensive), while Reviere finished with nine points, nine rebounds and six assists.

Cal U continues PSAC Crossover play on Wednesday, Jan. 6, when it hosts West Chester at 5:30 p.m.
