Women's Soccer earns win at Mansfield, 2-1

Vulcans score the game-winning goal in the 88th minute

MANSFIELD, Pa (Sept. 5) – Senior Kara Novotny (Irwin, Pa/Penn Trafford) tallied two goals, including the game-winner in the 88th minute, as the Vulcans earned a 2-1 victory at Mansfield in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) action on Saturday afternoon.

The California University of Pennsylvania women's soccer team moved to 1-0-1 overall this season with both games in league play. Meanwhile, Mansfield suffered the loss in its season-opener

The Vulcans opened the scoring in the 31st minute when Novotny scored on a cross from sophomore transfer Daniela Dell'Aquila (Toronto, Ontario/St. Elizabeth Catholic) and took a 1-0 lead at halftime. Mansfield tied the game at the 69:55-mark after a 40-yard pass into the box was put into the net by Delaney Meadows. Cal U and Mansfield exchanged scoring chances until early in the 88th minute when Novotny registered the eventual, game-winning goal - her third goal of the season -  from 20 yards to give the Vulcans a 2-1 lead.

Junior goalkeeper Meghan Jayes (New Albany, Ohio/New Albany) earned the win after posting five saves. Cal U held a 21-14 advantage in shots, while both teams registered four corner kicks.

The Vulcans return to action on Wednesday, Sept. 9, when they travel to face Seton Hill in Greensburg, Pennsylvania, at 4 p.m.
