CALIFORNIA (Sept. 23) – The No. 24 Vulcans suffered a 1-0 double-overtime loss to Edinboro after allowing the game-winning goal in the 104th minute on Wednesday evening in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) action at the Phillipsburg Soccer Facility.
With the loss, the California University of Pennsylvania women's soccer team falls to 4-2-1 overall with all seven games coming in league play. The Vulcans debuted in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Top 25 poll this week after the Fighting Scots dropped out of the national rankings. Meanwhile, Edinboro improves to 5-2 this season behind a 4-1 mark in conference action.
The teams combined for only three shot attempts in the first half, all by Cal U, despite Edinboro collecting three corner kicks in less than one minute near the beginning of the game. The Vulcans narrowly missed tallying a goal in the 50th minute when Edinboro goalkeeper Sarah Baskey made a diving save on a shot attempt by senior
Kaili Smith (Independence, Ohio/Independence). In the final two minutes of regulation, junior goalkeeper
Meghan Jayes (New Albany, Ohio/New Albany) registered a pair of saves to force the game into overtime.
In the 94th minute, Edinboro junior Jessica Sandhas hit the crossbar on a free kick from just outside the circle above the box. The Fighting Scots again pressured the net in the closing seconds of the first overtime period, as Jayes made a save with 13 seconds left following a corner kick.
Jayes collected another save in the opening minute of the second overtime before reigning PSAC Athlete of the Week Jansen Hartmann collected a loose ball on a redirection and scored the game-winning goal (unassisted), her seventh of the year, at the 103:06-mark.
Jayes set a season high with seven saves on 13 attempts, while Baskey registered the shutout after making two saves.
Despite being held without a shot in the first period, the Fighting Scots finished the game with a 13-8 shot advantage and also posted a 7-3 edge in corner kicks.
Cal U returns to action on Saturday, Sept. 26, when it travels to face Bloomsburg at 1 p.m.
