Women's Soccer falls in final minute at Rock, 2-1

Kearns tied game in 85th minute with goal on a corner kick

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. (Sept. 15) – The California University of Pennsylvania women's soccer team, which tied the score in the 85th minute, suffered a 2-1 loss at Slippery Rock in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) action on Tuesday afternoon after allowing the game-winning goal with only 34 seconds remaining in regulation.

With the loss, the Vulcans fall to 3-1-1 this season with all five games in league play. Cal U opened the season on a four-game unbeaten streak for the first time since 2011 when it set the school record with 20 victories. Meanwhile, The Rock improves to 3-2 overall behind a 2-1 mark in conference action.

Slippery Rock took a 1-0 lead in the 34th minute when Dara Demich played in the ball from the right side to Andrea Felix for her fifth goal of the year. The Vulcans tied the score at the 84:19-mark when junior Danielle Kearns (Gibsonia, Pa./Deer Lakes) scored her first goal of the season off a corner kick. However, Slippery Rock prevented overtime when Demich registered the game-winning goal on a breakaway with just 34 seconds left in regulation.

Junior goalkeeper Meghan Jayes (New Albany, Ohio/New Albany) tallied four saves and extended her scoreless streak to over 233 minutes before allowing the initial goal of the game.

The Rock finished the game with a 15-6 shot advantage after attempting 11 shots in the second half. Meanwhile, the Vulcans posted a 4-3 edge in corner kicks.

Cal U returns to action on Saturday, Sept. 19, when it travels to face West Chester at 2:30 p.m.
