No. 18 Softball sweeps twinbill at IUP

Reicoff ties career high with 13 homers, sits one shy of single-season school record

INDIANA, Pa. (April 18) – Junior first baseman Lindsay Reicoff (Pittsburgh, Pa./Chartiers Valley) belted two homers and totaled six RBI on Saturday afternoon, as the No. 18 Vulcans swept a doubleheader at IUP in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West play, posting a 12-0 run-rule victory in Game 1 before earning a 5-3 win.

With the sweep, the California University of Pennsylvania softball team improves to 20-9 overall and 14-5 in league play. The Vulcans now sit second in the PSAC West standings behind Gannon, which has played three less divisional games to this point. Meanwhile, the Crimson Hawks fall to 12-14 this season behind a 10-6 mark in divisional action.

In Game 1, Reicoff went 3-for-4 with a three-run homer, four RBI and two runs scored, while sophomore catcher Megan Jahoda (Buchanan, N.Y./Hendrick Hudson) finished 3-for-3 with two doubles, one RBI and two runs scored. Sophomore right fielder Kaity Finley (Latrobe, Pa./Greater Latrobe) collected three hits and scored twice from the leadoff spot and freshman left fielder Jacquelyn Fowler (Grove City, Ohio/Central Crossing) added two hits, two RBI and three runs scored. Freshman designated player Hailey Wilson (Delaware, Ohio/Olentangy) also tallied a pair of hits and freshman shortstop Emily Price (Warren, Ohio/Howland) posted a pair of runs scored in the victory.

After two scoreless innings, Cal U took a 4-0 lead in the top of the third after the initial seven batters reached base. Fowler led off the inning with a solo homer, her fourth of the year, before Reicoff later delivered an RBI double to right field. Senior center field Shelby Heyd (Innisfil, Ontario/Nantyr Shores Secondary) then lined a two-run single through the middle.

The Vulcans batted around in the fourth and stretched the lead to 10-0. Wilson opened the inning with a single before Fowler followed with an RBI triple to right center and Jahoda then posted an RBI double down the left-field line. Finley collected an RBI single and Reicoff later belted a three-run homer to close the scoring. In the top of the fifth, Cal U added a pair of insurance runs with Fowler scoring on a wild pitch and Jahoda touching home plate on a fielder's choice.

Junior Alex Sagl (Oakville, Ontario/Oakville Trafalgar) tossed a three-hit, complete-game shutout and posted six strikeouts, while allowing just two baserunners to reach scoring position over 5.0 innings. IUP starter Alexa Campbell (7-7) suffered the loss after being roughed up for seven runs (all earned) on nine hits in 3.0-plus innings.

In Game 2, the Vulcans broke a 3-3 tie in the top of the seventh with a two-run homer by Reicoff, her 13th of the year. She has now matched her career high and is just one homer shy of tying the single-season school record that was last reached in 2013 by former All-American second baseman Shelby Lia. Junior third baseman Natalya Smarra (McKees Rocks, Pa./Sto-Rox) was the lone player to post a multi-hit game in the contest, finishing 3-for-4 with one run scored.

IUP took a 1-0 lead in the second after manufacturing the run with two singles, one walk and a sacrifice bunt. The Vulcans stranded two runners in scoring position in the top of the third before the Crimson Hawks added an unearned run in the bottom of the inning. Cal U claimed the lead in the fourth on a three-run homer by Jahoda, her second of the year, before IUP tied the score in the bottom of the inning with a two-out, bases-loaded RBI single. Both teams stranded a pair of runners in the fifth before Reicoff belted the eventual, game-winning homer in the seventh.

Sagl improved to 11-4 this season after also earning the victory in Game 2, working 2.2 innings of scoreless relief with five of her eight outs being strikeouts. Junior starter Meghan Uher (Acme, Pa./Connellsville) took a no-decision after allowing two runs (one earned) on four hits with three strikeouts in 2.2 innings. IUP sophomore Amanda Spindler (3-7) was saddled with the loss after surrendering five runs (all earned) on 10 hits and three walks in 7.0 innings.

The Vulcans return to action on Monday, April 20, when they host a doubleheader against IUP at 2:30 p.m.
