WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (March 8) – The California University of Pennsylvania baseball team lost both games of its doubleheader against Winston-Salem State by scores of 9-6 and 13-6 on Sunday afternoon at BB&T Ballpark.
With the losses, the Vulcans fall to 0-4 overall. Meanwhile, the Rams improve to 14-4 overall and extend their winning streak to five games.
In Game 1, Winston-Salem State jumped out to a 3-0 lead before Cal U responded in the top of the fourth. The Vulcans loaded the bases on two singles and an error before senior catcher
Will Kaufman (Roanoke, Va./Patrick Henry) singled in a run to cut the Ram lead to 3-1. After a fielder's choice RBI by junior

Danny McGrath (Murrysville, Pa./Franklin Regional) scored on a wild pitch to tie the game at 3-3. Winston-Salem State reclaimed lead at 6-3 after a two-run home run by infielder Nathan Steger in the bottom of the fourth.
In the top of the sixth, McGrath drew a leadoff walk before Kaufman doubled to center. Both came around to score on single by junior
Jared Grove (Greencastle, Pa./Greencastle-Antrim) before a sacrifice fly by junior first baseman
David Marcus (Whitby, Ontario/Father Leo J. Austin) tied the score at 6-6. Winston Salem State again answered with three-run inning to earn the 9-6 win.
Grove finished 1-for-2 with an RBI, while senior shortstop
Matt Peters (Upper Darby, Pa./Upper Darby) was 2-for-2 with two walks and Kaufman went 2-for-3 with a run scored an RBI and a walk. Freshman
Matt Carter (Glenshaw, Pa./Shaler) suffered the loss after tossing 0.2 innings of relief and yielding three runs (all earned) on three hits.
In Game 2, the Rams jumped out to a quick 6-0 lead after the first inning before the Vulcans cut the lead to 6-4 after scoring four runs in the top of the second. Cal U totaled three extra-base hits, as redshirt freshman third baseman
Levi Krause (East Berlin, Pa./Spring Grove), Kaufman and sophomore left fielder
Shane Heim (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine-Richland) each notched run-scoring doubles. The Vulcans added an unearned run in the top of the third to pull to within 7-5 on a fielder's choice by McGrath. Winston-Salem State then added two runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings to take the 13-6 win.
Krause led Cal U by going 2-for-4 with two doubles, two runs and an RBI and was one of seven Vulcans to record a hit. Heim finished 1-for-3 with two RBI and a double. Redshirt junior
GJ Senchak (New Castle, Pa./New Castle) was 1-for-2 with two walks and an RBI. Junior starting pitcher
Cory Craig (Youngsville, Pa./Youngsville) took the loss after allowing seven runs (five earned) in 1.0-plus inning of work.
The Vulcans return to action on Tuesday, March 10, when they face Bloomsburg in Cary, North Carolina, at the USA Baseball Complex, which is the site of the Division II National Championship. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
