CALIFORNIA (March 29) – The No. 22 Vulcans split a doubleheader with Seton Hill on Sunday afternoon in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West action at Lilley Field, winning 2-1 in walk-off fashion in Game 1 before falling 10-5 in Game 2.
With the split, the California University of Pennsylvania softball team moves to 9-5 overall behind a 3-1 mark in league play. The loss in Game 2 snapped a 41-game PSAC West winning streak by the Vulcans. Meanwhile, Seton Hill improves to 11-5 this season and 3-3 in conference action.
In Game 1, Seton Hill scored its lone run on a passed ball with two outs in the top of the fifth inning. In the bottom half of the inning, Cal U put the tying run on second after freshman left fielder
Jacquelyn Fowler (Grove City, Ohio/Central Crossing) reached on a single before advancing to second on a sacrifice bunt. However, the Griffins retired the next two batters to escape the jam.
After Seton Hill went down in order in the top of the seventh, Cal U put the tying run on base with a lead-off walk by freshman pinch hitter
Courtney Sinclair (Oil City, Ontario/Lambton Central). Classmate
Hailey Wilson (Delaware, Ohio/Olentangy) then reached base via a throwing error by the pitcher and Sinclair advanced to third. Fowler followed by delivering a walk-off double off the top of the center-field wall, which scored Sinclair and senior pinch runner
Becca Reinhart (Shoemakersville, Pa./Reading Central Catholic).
The Vulcans were held to four hits in the victory with Fowler finishing 2-for-3 with one double and two RBI. Junior starting pitcher
Alex Sagl (Oakville, Ontario/Oakville Trafalgar) earned the complete-game shutout, allowing just one hit and two walks and striking out 11.
In Game 2, Cal U jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning on RBI singles from senior shortstop
Breanna Morris (Waynesburg, Pa./Waynesburg Central) and a sacrifice fly from freshman designated player
Emily Price (Warren, Ohio/Howland). A two-run single by the Griffins in the top of the fourth cut the deficit to 3-2 before Cal U added a solo homer by Fowler in the bottom of the inning. The Griffins then tied the game at 4-4 in the fifth on a two-run homer from left fielder Paige Hertzog before Seton Hill took the lead with a pair of unearned runs before earning the 10-5 win.
Six different Vulcans tallied a hit and Fowler scored two runs. Sophomore
Kaity Davis (Massillon, Ohio/Jackson) suffered the loss after allowing four runs (all earned) on three hits in just 0.1 innings of relief.
The Vulcans continue PSAC West play when they host a doubleheader with Edinboro tomorrow, March 30, beginning at 2:30 p.m.
