No. 18 Cal U falls in OT to Gannon, 69-63

Vulcans force 24 turnovers, out-rebounded by 52-29 margin

CALIFORNIA (Feb. 21) – In a game that featured nine ties and 16 lead changes, the No. 18 California University of Pennsylvania women's basketball team suffered a 69-63 overtime loss to Gannon in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West play Saturday afternoon.

With the loss, the Vulcans drop to 22-4 overall and fall into second place in the PSAC West standing with an 18-3 record in league play with one divisional game remaining. Meanwhile, Gannon improves to 19-6 this season and 17-4 in conference action.

Sophomore Miki Glenn (Bridgeport, W.Va./Bridgeport) led Cal U with 18 points on 5-of-15 shooting, including seven-of-eight from the charity stripe. She added five rebounds, five steals and two assists while playing all 45 minutes. Freshman Seairra Barrett (Center Twp., Pa./Central Valley) scored 10 points on four-of-seven shooting and collected three rebounds, two blocks and one steal. Senior Kaitlynn Fratz (Accident, Md./Northern Garrett) registered nine points, two assists and two steals, while junior Lana Doran (Northamptonshire, England/Barking Abbey) totaled eight points, three steals and two rebounds while playing all 45 minutes.

The teams traded points over the opening four minutes of the game with Gannon taking an 11-8 lead after a three-pointer by senior Candice Hendricks. A steal by Glenn led to a layup by senior Irina Kukolj (Harrisonburg, Va. / Harrisonburg) which gave the Vulcans their first lead of the game, 12-11, at the 14:31-mark. Gannon responded by taking a 15-12 lead after jumpers by Hendricks and junior Jennie Thies. In the middle of a 7-3 Vulcan run, Doran grabbed an offensive rebound off a missed free-throw and converted a layup. Barrett highlighted the run with a basket from inside the paint that put Cal U up 19-18 at the 5:31-mark. A three-pointer from junior Paige Wright (Fort Wayne, Ind./Northrop) tied the game at 24-24 with 2:36 remaining in the first half. A pair of free-throws from Glenn gave Cal U a 30-27 lead with one minute left in the half before Gannon took a 31-30 lead into the intermission.

In the second half, the Lady Knights took a 36-32 lead on a three-pointer by senior Mollie Sebald at the 17:44-mark. The Vulcans went two minutes without a basket before a jumper by Barrett cut the Gannon lead to 38-36 with 14:25 remaining. The Lady Knights then answered with a 17-9 run over a 5:33 stretch that pushed their lead to 55-46 at the 7:49-mark. A layup by Glenn pulled the Vulcans to within 57-52 and helped spark a 13-2 Cal U run that gave the Vulcans a 59-57 lead with just under two minutes left in regulation. After a 30-second timeout, Gannon forced overtime on a basket by Hendricks with just over 30 seconds to play.

In the extra session, the Lady Knights pushed their lead to 64-59 after a three-pointer by Sebald at the 3:47-mark. Cal U pulled to within 64-63 after a pair of free-throws by senior Emma Mahady (Albury, Australia/Xavier) with 2:35 to play in overtime. Layups on ensuing possessions from senior Nettie Blake sealed the Gannon win.

Cal U finished the game shooting a season-low 30.2 percent (19-of-63) from the floor, including just 16.7 percent (4-of-24) from beyond the arc. Meanwhile, Gannon shot at a 45.0 clip (27-of-60) behind a .542 field-goal percentage (13-of-24) in the first half. The Lady Knights out-rebounded the Vulcans by a sizeable 52-29 margin and scored 23 second-chance points. Cal U forced 24 turnovers and converted them into 17 points.

Blake scored a team-high 18 points on 8-of-11 shooting to pace the Lady Knights. Hendricks scored 16 points on 7-of-11 shooting while adding four rebounds and three assists.

The Vulcans close out the regular season on Wednesday, Feb. 25, when they travel to Slippery Rock at 6 p.m.
