Volleyball claims road win at Clarion, 3-1

Four Vulcans finish with double-digit kills, team collects nine service aces

CLARION, Pa. (Nov. 7) – The California University of Pennsylvania volleyball team completed a road weekend sweep in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West play with a 3-1 victory (25-22, 25-16, 23-25, 25-22) at Clarion on Saturday afternoon.

With the win, the Vulcans extend their winning streak to six matches and move to 14-6 overall behind a 12-8 mark in league play. Meanwhile, the Golden Eagles fall to 18-14 on the year with a 14-6 record in conference action. 

Junior Danielle Hayes (Erie, Pa./McDowell) led the team with 13 kills and also finished with 17.0 points. Senior Mary Lavery (La Plata, Md./La Plata) recorded 12 kills, while freshman Seairra Barrett (Center Twp.,/Central Valley) and senior Miranda Fouzie (Kingston, Ontario/Sydenham) each registered 10 kills with Fouzie tallying a staggering .625 hitting percentage. Junior Megan Litoborski (Lemont, Ill./Lemont) led the offense with 43 assists and Hayes finished with four service aces.

Defensively, junior Abby Matusik (Mars, Pa./Mars) collected a team-leading 19 digs and Lavery recorded a season-high 17 digs. Hayes and sophomore Ashley Leto (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) posted 16 and 15 digs, respectively. Litoborski tallied 14 digs for her 20th assist/dig double-double of the season. Fouzie led the way on the net with six blocks, while Lavery and Barrett added two blocks in the win.

Clarion started the first set by winning five of the first six points to force Cal U to call a timeout. The Vulcans rallied to win four of the next seven points to cut the lead to 7-5. The teams split the next six points to give the Golden Eagles an 11-8 lead. Cal U rallied to win three-consecutive points off a service ace from Matusik to tie the set at 11-11. The Golden Eagles were able to take three of the next four points before the Vulcans won three-straight points to take their first lead of the game at 15-14. After calling a timeout, Clarion rallied to win three of the next four points to take a 17-16 lead. Cal U responded with four-consecutive points that was capped by a kill from Barrett to take a 20-17 lead. The Golden Eagles won three-straight to tie the set before the Vulcans won five of the last seven points to take the set 25-22 after a kill by Lavery.

The second game started with Cal U winning the first four points and Clarion responded by winning five-consecutive points to take a 5-4 lead. The Vulcans then won 10 of the next 11 points, including a seven-point rally, to take a 14-6 lead. After a timeout by the Golden Eagles, Cal U took four of six points to increase its lead to 18-8. The two teams split the next six points before Clarion took four of six points to cut the lead to 24-16. The Vulcans ended the set after a kill by Leto to win 25-16.

The Golden Eagles began the third set by winning eight of the first 10 points to take an 8-2 lead. Cal U responded by taking six of the next eight points to cut the lead to 10-8. The teams split the next six points before the Vulcans won four of the next five points to take a 15-14 lead. Clarion won the next two points before Cal U responded by winning the next three points and forcing the home team to call a timeout. The Golden Eagles won seven of the following 10 points to take a 23-22 lead late in the third set. Clarion avoided the sweep by winning two of the last three points to win the third set 25-23.

The two teams split the first 10 points of the fourth set before the Golden Eagles won four of the next five points to take a 9-6 lead. The Vulcans then won five of the following eight points to cut the lead to 12-11. The teams traded points before Cal U won five-straight points to take a 17-14 lead. The two teams traded points before also trading rallies of three points to make the score 22-19 in favor of the Vulcans. The two teams ended the set by alternating the final six points, which allowed Cal U to win the set 25-22 and win the match.

The Vulcans return to action on Friday, Nov. 13, against Slippery Rock at 7 p.m.
