Kowan Scott (Easton, Pa./Wilson) broke the all-time school record for receiving yards and senior quarterback
James Harris (Woodstock, Ga./Etowah) threw for a career-high five touchdowns, as the Vulcans closed the regular season with a 56-24 victory at Lock Haven on Saturday afternoon.
With the win, the California University of Pennsylvania football team improves to 8-3 overall and have now posted at least eight wins in 10 of the last 11 seasons. The Vulcans entered the weekend ranked eighth in the latest NCAA Super Region One rankings with the selection show scheduled for tomorrow, Sunday, Nov. 15. Meanwhile, the Bald Eagles finish the season with a 2-9 mark.
Scott finished with a game-high 124 receiving yards and one touchdown on five catches. With his performance, he surpassed former NFL wide receiver
Perry Kemp (1980-83) for the all-time school record with 2,649 receiving yards. Scott also eclipsed the 1,000-yard mark (1,006) for the first time in his career on Saturday and set a career high for receptions (45).
Harris posted 356 yards of total offense and set a career high with five passing touchdowns. He finished with 299 passing yards on 17-of-30 attempts with no interceptions and became the first quarterback with five touchdown passes in a game since
Peter Lalich in 2011. Harris also moved past Lalich for fourth in school history with 56 career passing touchdowns and became the first quarterback in program history to record multiple 3,000-yard seasons in a career.
Junior wide receiver
Garry Brown (Columbus, Ohio/Westerville South) tied his career high with three touchdown receptions and registered his fifth 100-yard game of the season. He finished with 111 yards and three scores on a game-high eight receptions. Brown also climbed up to fourth all-time in school history with 2,286 receiving yards and is now tied with
Terrance Moore (2009-10) for fourth with 21 career receiving touchdowns. A native of Ohio, Brown eclipsed the 1,000-yard mark against the Bald Eagles and is the first player in school history with multiple 1,000-yard seasons in a career.
Lock Haven opened the game with a 22-yard field goal before Cal U answered with a five-yard touchdown run by senior
Derrick Fiore (Monongahela, Pa./Ringgold) with 6:18 left in the first quarter. Following a touchdown run by the Bald Eagles, the Vulcans responded with a 23-yard touchdown pass from Harris to Brown with 2:02 remaining in the quarter.
On the third play of the second quarter, Cal U stretched the lead to 21-10 on a 36-yard touchdown reception by Brown. After the teams traded field position, the Vulcans added to their lead on a 1-yard touchdown run by sophomore
John Franklin III (Canal Winchester, Ohio/Canal Winchester), who finished with Franklin finishing with 68 rushing yards and two touchdowns, with 8:04 left before halftime. On the ensuing drive, junior defensive lineman
Jawan Turner (Pittsburgh, Pa./Woodland Hills) forced a fumble that was recovered by sophomore linebacker
DeVonte Suber (Coatesville, Pa./Coatesville) at the Vulcans 1-yard line. Cal U was held to a three-and-out before Lock Haven cut the deficit to 28-17 on a four-yard touchdown run with 1:40 remaining in the second quarter. The Vulcans answered with an 86-yard scoring drive in just over minute, highlighted by an 18-yard touchdown reception by sophomore wide receiver
Luke Smorey (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) with 31 seconds left before halftime. Cal U quickly regained possession when junior defensive back
Jordan Bowman (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) registered his team-leading fifth interception on the first play of the ensuing drive.
The Vulcans added to their lead on the second offensive play of the third quarter when Harris found Scott for an 87-yard touchdown. Lock Haven answered on the following drive with a 17-yard touchdown pass to cut the deficit to 42-24 with 10:15 left in the third quarter. The Vulcans forced a turnover on downs near the red zone later in the quarter after the Bald Eagles recovered a fumble near midfield. Cal U then capped an 11-play drive with a 5-yard touchdown reception by Brown with 2:31 remaining in the third quarter.
Early in the fourth quarter, Cal U forced a turnover on downs inside the red zone and Turner forced another fumble with 7:22 left to play. The Vulcans capitalized on the turnover with another 1-yard score by Franklin with 5:40 remaining in the game. Cal U later forced a turnover on downs when a fourth-and-goal pass fell incomplete with 2:23 left in the fourth quarter.
Suber led the team and set a career high with 12 tackles (eight solo) and added 1.0 TFL, one fumble recovery and one pass break-up. Junior defensive back
Aaron Terry (Pasadena, Md./Chesapeake) finished with nine stops (seven solo) and four different players tallied five tackles in the victory, including Turner, who also registered two forced fumbles.
