CALIFORNIA (Oct. 31) – The California University of Pennsylvania men's soccer team closed its regular season with a 5-1 victory on Senior Day against Lock Haven in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) play at the Phillipsburg Soccer Facility on Saturday afternoon.
With the win, the Vulcans improve to 9-6-1 overall with a 6-4-1 record in league play. Cal U has earned the fifth seed in the PSAC Tournament and will play at fourth-seeded Slippery Rock in the first round on Tuesday, Nov. 3. Meanwhile, the Bald Eagles fall to 7-10-1 on the year behind a 6-5-0 conference mark and earned the sixth and final seed in the league tournament.
The Vulcans took a 1-0 lead at the 31:37-mark when sophomore
Nick Cichon (Monongahela, Pa./Ringgold) netted his second goal of the season with assists from freshman
Mike Cummings (McDonald, Pa./ West Allegheny) and senior
Lubos Kubik (Pardubice, Czech Republic/Roosevelt (Iowa)). Kubik now leads the conference with 10 assists, which is the fifth-most in single-season school history. Minutes later, senior
Jesse Scheirer (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) posted his team-leading 10th goal of the season in the 35th minute after receiving a pass from junior
Elliot Taylor (Monace, Pa./Central Valley). Lock Haven was able to cut the lead to 2-1 before the half when Tyler Sablyak registered a goal at the 43:03-mark.
The Vulcans scored early in the second half when freshman
Eric Campbell (Erie, Pa./Harbor Creek) tallied his sixth goal of the year after collecting a pass in the box from Scheirer in the 54th minute. Later in the half, sophomore
Nathan Delgado (Lancaster, Pa./Conestoga Valley) netted his third goal of the year at the 84:21-mark after receiving a long pass from freshman goalkeeper
Lucas Exner (Horstmar, Germany/Pascal-Gymnasium), which was his first career point. Cal U added one more score in the 87th minute when Cichon added his second goal of the contest after receiving a pass from Delgado.
Exner collected three saves to earn the win, while senior
Aaron Donley (Fredericksburg, Va./Stafford) added one save in the closing minutes.
The Vulcans held a sizeable 28-11 advantage in shots and also held a 5-2 edge in corner kicks with all five coming in the first half.
Cal U returns to action in the first round of the PSAC Tournament on Tuesday when it travels to face Slippery Rock at 4 p.m.
