Women's Soccer blanked by ESU, 1-0

Vulcans held without shot on goal in losing effort

CALIFORNIA (Oct. 2) – In a meeting of the last two league champions, the Vulcans suffered a 1-0 loss to East Stroudsburg on Friday afternoon in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) play at the Phillipsburg Soccer Complex.

With the loss, the California University of Pennsylvania women's soccer team falls to 4-4-2 overall and 4-3-2 in league play. The Vulcans have now been held scoreless in four-straight games (0-3-1), as their last goal came in the 17th minute on Sept. 19. Meanwhile, the Warriors improved to 6-4 this season behind a 3-3 mark in conference action.

The Vulcans nearly took the lead in the opening 10 minutes when a shot attempt by senior Janelle McCann (Burlington, Vt./Tilton School) deflected off the crossbar. East Stroudsburg later placed two shots on goal in just over 90 seconds with junior goalkeeper Meghan Jayes (New Albany, Ohio/New Albany) making a pair of saves.

After a scoreless first half, the Warriors scored the game-winning goal in the 50th minute when Shea Neal redirected a ball that deflected off the back of a defender's foot. East Stroudsburg nearly added to its lead at the 71:47-mark when an attempt by Liia Carpenter deflected off to crossbar and into an open area of the net before Cal U cleared the ball.

Jayes finished with five saves in the losing effort, as she is the fourth goalie in the league this season with 50 saves.

East Stroudsburg finished with an 8-6 shot advantage and prevented Cal U from placing an attempt on net. The Warriors also claimed a 5-2 edge in corner kicks in the victory.

The Vulcans return to action tomorrow, Saturday, Oct. 3, when they host Kutztown at 3 p.m.
