Vulcans rally past Bloomsburg, 75-68

Cal U makes season-high 30 free-throws in victory, most since Nov. 2012

BLOOMSBURG, Pa. (Jan. 4) – Behind four players scoring in double-digits, the Vulcans earned a 75-68 victory at Bloomsburg in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Crossover play on Sunday afternoon.

With the win, the California University of Pennsylvania men's basketball team improves to 10-4 this season behind a 5-1 mark on the road. The Vulcans are also now 6-3 in league action after winning four of their last five games against conference opponents. Meanwhile, the Huskies fall to 6-6 overall and 2-6 in conference play after suffering their sixth-consecutive loss.

Junior guard Khalil Jabbie (Alexandria, Va./Edison) scored a team-high 16 points after shooting three-of-six from the floor and 9-of-12 from the free-throw line. He also collected four rebounds and five assists in the victory. Jabbie is averaging 14.0 points, 4.1 rebounds and 4.1 assists over the last 10 games during which the Vulcans have posted an 8-2 record.

Fellow junior Richard Smith (Cleveland, Ohio/Lutheran East) finished with 15 points after making seven-of-seven from the field. Freshman Daniel Sapp (Streetsboro, Ohio/Streetsboro) posted 12 points and a team-high eight rebounds off the bench, while junior Jake Jacubec (Struthers, Ohio/Struthers) added 10 points on Sunday.

The teams traded baskets for much of the opening 10 minutes of the game before the Vulcans mounted a 10-4 run to take a 25-18 lead with 8:41 left in the first half on back-to-back layups by Smith. Bloomsburg answered with consecutive baskets before Cal U worked its lead to 35-28 after two free-throws by sophomore Drew Cook (Beaver Falls, Pa./Beaver Falls) at the 1:45-mark. The Huskies scored five of the last seven points in the first half, as the Vulcans held a 39-35 lead at the break.

Bloomsburg scored the opening nine points of the second half to take a 44-39 lead with 14:57 remaining. The Vulcans made their initial field goal in the second half at the 12:59-mark and went on an 11-0 run to take a 52-46 lead with 9:29 left to play. Cal U later mounted an 11-6 rally, started by back-back dunks by Smith, to take a 64-56 lead at the 3:04-mark. The Vulcans sealed the victory in the final minute by making seven-of-eight attempts from the free-throw line.

The Vulcans made 47.6 percent (20-of-42) from the floor despite only seven field goals in the second half. However, Cal U set a season high with 30 free-throws made while shooting 66.7 percent (30-of-45) from the charity stripe. Meanwhile, Bloomsburg shot at a 43.3 clip (23-of-53) from the field and 61.5 percent (16-of-26) from the free-throw line. The Vulcans held a 34-29 rebounding advantage and forced 18 turnovers in the victory.

Senior Alssene Saintilus scored a game-high 20 points off the bench behind six-of-nine from the floor and 8-of-14 from the charity stripe. Classmate Jon Riles added 13 points, four rebounds and four assists in the loss.

Cal U closes out PSAC Crossover action on Wednesday, Jan. 7, when it hosts East Stroudsburg at 7:30 p.m.
