CALIFORNIA (Jan. 31) – Sophomore guard
Miki Glenn (Bridgeport, W.Va./Bridgeport) scored a team-high 19 points in leading the California University of Pennsylvania women's basketball team to a 75-48 victory over Edinboro in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West action on Saturday afternoon at the Convocation Center.
With the win, the Vulcans improve to 17-3 overall and 14-2 in PSAC play. The Vulcans remain tied for second place in the PSAC West standings and a half-game behind division-leading IUP. Meanwhile, Edinboro falls to 14-6 this season behind an 11-5 mark in league play.
Glenn, who played all 40 minutes, made five-of-seven shots from the floor and connected on 8-of-10 attempts from the charity stripe. She also added five rebounds, three assists, one block and one steal. Senior
Emma Mahady (Albury, Australia/Xavier) totaled 15 points on five-of-nine shooting, four rebounds and three steals in 28 minutes. Classmate
Kaitlynn Fratz (Accident, Md./Northern Garrett) added 13 points and three steals, while fellow senior
Irina Kukolj (Harrisonburg, Va./Harrisonburg) recorded 10 points, five rebounds and four steals.
Cal U opened the game on a 12-2 run with four different players scoring during the run, led by four points from both Glenn and Kukolj. The Vulcans extended their lead to 20-4 after three-pointer by Fratz at the 11:57-mark before the Fighting Scots pulled within 22-10 after a layup with 10:03 left in the first half. Cal U then answered with a 14-9 run to extend its lead to 36-17 with just under four minutes left before the break. The Vulcans led by as many as 22 points after a layup by Kukolj with six seconds left in the half to take a 45-23 halftime lead. The Vulcans totaled seven steals in the first half after entering the game averaging 12.1 steals per game this season.
In the second half, Fratz completed a traditional three-point play to give the Vulcans a 48-25 lead with 18:49 left. The Fighting Scots then pulled within 17 points, 48-31, at the 17:19-mark before the Vulcans responded with a 17-2 run over nearly seven minutes to extend the lead to a game-high 32 points, 65-33, midway through the second half. The Vulcans shot 8-of-12 from the floor during the rally while forcing eight Fighting Scot turnovers, including five steals.
Cal U finished the game shooting 43.3 percent (26-of-60) from the floor and 79.2 percent (19-of-24) from the free-throw line. Meanwhile, Edinboro shot 38.9 percent (21-of-54) from the field while connecting on just one-of-eight attempts from three-point range. The Fighting Scots held a 40-30 rebounding advantage while the Vulcans collected 13 steals and forced 27 turnovers. Cal U has recorded double-digit steals in four-straight games and 13 times overall this season.
Junior Aignee' Freeland scored a game-high 23 points on 11-19 shooting and adding six rebounds. Graduate student Laurel Lindsay added seven points, five rebounds and one block in the losing effort. Reigning PSAC West Athlete of the Year Valerie Majewski was limited to four points and three rebounds, while committing six turnovers.
Cal U continues PSAC West play on Wednesday, Feb. 4, when it travels to face No. 5 and PSAC West-leading IUP at 5:30 p.m.
