Kaitlynn Fratz (Accident, Md./Northern Garrett) and sophomore
Miki Glenn (Bridgeport, W.Va./Bridgeport) both scored 15 points in the second half on Saturday afternoon, as the No. 22 Vulcans earned a 73-65 win at Seton Hill in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West play.
With the victory, the California University of Pennsylvania women's basketball team improves to 14-2 overall with an 11-1 mark in league action. Meanwhile, Seton Hill falls to 7-10 this season behind a 4-8 record in conference play.
Glenn scored a game-high 20 points on 7-of-10 shooting and six-of-seven from the free-throw line. She added seven rebounds and five assists while playing all 40 minutes. The reigning PSAC West Freshman of the Year, Glenn has posted six 20-point games this season and leads the team in scoring at 16.4 points per game.
Fratz finished with 19 points on 8-of-13 attempts from the floor and added eight rebounds and five assists against the Griffins. Freshman
Seairra Barrett (Center Twp., Pa./Central Valley) totaled 13 points and a team-high nine rebounds off the bench, while senior
Emma Mahady (Albury, Australia/Xavier) posted 10 points and eight rebounds.
The teams traded baskets in the opening four minutes of the game before Cal U mounted an 8-3 run to take an 18-10 lead on a layup by Fratz with 13:59 left in the first half. The Griffins answered with an 11-2 rally to take a 21-20 lead at the 7:20-mark, as the Vulcans shot just one-of-seven from the floor during the six-plus minute span. Cal U later posted a 7-3 run with Barrett scoring all seven points to take a 28-26 lead with 3:39 remaining before halftime. The Griffins closed the first half on a 9-2 rally to take a 35-30 lead after the Vulcans snapped a nearly three minute scoreless drought on a jumper by Glenn with 40 seconds left.
The Vulcans scored six of seven points early in the second half to take a 42-40 lead on a jumper by Fratz with 14:08 remaining. Cal U later posted a 9-2 run to take a 51-46 lead on a basket by Fratz before Seton Hill scored six of the next eight points to reclaim the lead at 54-53 with 6:26 left to play. The Vulcans countered with a 7-3 run over nearly two minutes to take a 60-57 lead at the 4:32-mark on a layup by Fratz, which marked the final lead change of the game. Glenn converted a traditional three-point play nearly one minute later and Barrett scored on a jumper to give Cal U a 65-61 lead with 2:08 remaining. The Vulcans made all eight of their free-throw attempts in the final 90 seconds to secure the victory.
Cal U shot over 55 percent in the second half and finished the game with a .483 field-goal percentage (28-of-58). The Vulcans also converted 76.5 percent (13-of-17) from the free-throw line, including 9-of-11 in the second half. In comparison, the Griffins shot at a 43.3 clip (26-of-60) from the floor and just 57.1 percent (8-of-14) from the charity stripe. Cal U out-rebounded Seton Hill by a 41-31 margin and scored 18 second-chance points.
Graduate student Chelsea Apke registered a double-double for the Griffins in the loss, finishing with 16 points and 14 rebounds (five offensive). Redshirt junior Kelly Brennan scored 15 points behind three three-pointers and senior Meghan Mastroianni added 10 points.
Cal U returns to action on Wednesday, Jan. 21, when it travels to face Gannon at the Hammermill Center in Erie, Pennsylvania, with tip-off at 5:30 p.m.
