GREENSBURG, Pa. (Jan. 17) – The California University of Pennsylvania men's basketball team dropped a 63-59 decision to Seton Hill in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West action on Saturday afternoon.
With the loss, the Vulcans fall to 11-6 overall with a 7-5 record in league action. Meanwhile, Seton Hill extends its winning streak to three games and improves to 6-10 this season behind a 5-7 mark in conference play.
Junior
Richard Smith (Cleveland, Ohio/Lutheran East) scored a team-high 12 points on 6-of-10 shooting and also recorded four rebounds. Classmate
Khalil Jabbie (Alexandria, Va./Edison) added 11 points, six rebounds, and five assists, while freshman
Daniel Sapp (Streetsboro, Ohio/Streetsboro) scored nine points on 4-of-10 shooting in his first career start. Senior
Arman Marks (Louisville, Ky./Eastern) totaled eight points, two assists and two steals off the bench.
In a first half which saw neither team lead by more than five points, Seton Hill used an 8-0 run to take an early 8-5 lead after a layup at the 16:02-mark. Cal U then took the lead back on a three-pointer by junior
Josh Dombrosky (Shenandoah Heights, Pa./Shenandoah Valley) with 13:08 left before halftime. The Griffins used an 11-6 run over a nearly seven-minute stretch to take a 23-20 lead at the 6:27-mark before the Vulcans countered with a 9-2 run to extend their lead to 29-22 with less than one minute remaining in the half. Seton Hill then converted a traditional three-point play to cut the Cal U lead to 29-28 at halftime.
Cal U and Seton Hill traded points over the opening five-minutes of the second half before a three-pointer gave the Vulcans a 36-33 lead at the 14:29-mark. A pair of free-throws by Jabbie then gave the Vulcans a 39-35 lead with 13:00 to play in the second half. Seton Hill responded with a 9-0 run over a nearly five-minute stretch to take a 47-39 lead at the 7:11-mark. The Vulcans cut the Griffins lead to just 51-48 after a three-pointer by Marks and dunk by Smith with 2:29 left to play. The Griffins then made their free-throws down the stretch to earn the win.
Cal U finished the game shooting nearly 43 percent (24-of-56) while posting a 36.8 clip (seven-of-19) from beyond the arc. Meanwhile, Seton Hill shot at a 48.9 clip (22-of-45) from the floor and connected on 38.9 percent (7-of-18) from three-point territory. The Vulcans out-rebounded the Griffins by a 31-26 margin, including a 10-3 edge in offensive rebounds, and scored 30 points from inside the paint.
The Vulcans return to action on Wednesday, Jan. 21, when they travel to face Gannon in Erie, Pennsylvania, at 7:30 p.m.
