The California University of Pennsylvania men's soccer team is now unbeaten in its last eight season-openers, including a 5-0-1 mark against Alderson Broaddus. The Vulcans and Battlers previously faced each other in season-openers for seven-consecutive years from 2005-11.

The Vulcans took an early 1-0 lead in the fourth minute when senior Jeffrey Kyei (Tübingen, Germany/SIT Tübingen) scored off a rebound from in close. Cal U managed to take a 1-0 lead into the break despite attempting 14 shots in the first half. Junior David Deamer (Manchester, Pa./Northeastern) added an insurance goal, his first goal since the 2012 season, at the 66:23-mark before the Battlers trimmed the deficit in the 81st minute when Deshawn Parker scored on a one-on-one opportunity.

Senior Shane Donovan (Pipersville, Pa./Central Bucks East), who missed the last 11 games in 2013 due to injury, finished with four saves to earn the victory in the season-opener. AB goalkeeper Ricard Lao tallied nine saves in the losing effort on Thursday.

The Vulcans finished the game with a 21-9 shot advantage and held a sizeable 15-2 edge in corner kicks.
