Cal U shutout at Shippensburg, 1-0

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. (Sept. 24) – Playing their first of four games in a week, the Vulcans suffered a 1-0 loss at Shippensburg in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) play on Wednesday afternoon.

With the loss, the California University of Pennsylvania men's soccer team falls to 1-4-1 overall with a 0-2 mark in league action. Meanwhile, Shippensburg improves to 3-2-1 this season while opening conference play on Wednesday.

The teams combined for 15 shots in the first half with neither team breaking the scoreless tie before the break. The Vulcans nearly took the lead in the 53rd minute when a shot by freshman Djordje Babic (Datteln, Germany/Comenius Gymnasium) hit off the crossbar. Shippensburg scored the only goal of the game at the 71:54-mark when sophomore Robert Furfaro took advantage of a short breakaway to tally his second goal of the year. Cal U nearly tied the game in the final minutes of the game before the Raiders goalkeeper made a point-blank save on a shot attempt by senior Tyler Woolum (Gahanna, Ohio/Gahanna Lincoln) at the 85:37-mark.

Senior goalkeeper Shane Donovan (Pipersville, Pa./Central Bucks East) finished with three saves while playing all 90 minutes. Shippensburg sophomore Evan Raimist registered the shutout after tallying eight saves on Wednesday.

Cal U nearly equaled its season high in shot attempts, out-shooting Shippensburg by a 20-12 margin after taking 12 shots in the second half. Both teams attempted four corner kicks in the contest.

The Vulcans return to action with a pair of home games this weekend, beginning on Saturday, Sept. 27, when they host Millersville at 4 p.m.
