SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. (April 19) – The California University of Pennsylvania volleyball team took a split of matches in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Crossover play on Friday, suffering a 3-0 loss (25-16, 25-21, 25-20) against defending-league champion Pitt-Johnstown before earning a 3-0 victory (26-24, 26-24, 25-18) at Shippensburg.
With the split, the Vulcans move to 7-4 overall with a 1-1 mark in league action. Head coach
Peter Letourneau also became the third coach in program history to reach the 100-win mark.
Against the Mountain Cats, sophomore
Danielle Hayes (Erie, Pa./McDowell) led the team with five kills and four other players finished with four kills. Freshman
Taylor Solo (Irwin, Pa./Penn-Trafford) guided the offense with 15 assists and also added five digs in the loss. The trio of sophomore
Abby Matusik (Mars, Pa./Mars), redshirt freshman
Rachel Snyder (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) and freshman
Ashley Leto (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) paced the defensive effort with nine digs, while sophomore
Cheyenne Rose (Lancaster, Ohio/Harvest Preparatory) tallied eight digs and two service aces.
Against the Raiders, junior
Mary Lavery (La Plata, Md./La Plata) finished with a team-best nine kills, while senior
Julia Muzy (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil/Liceu Franco Brasileiro) and Leto both added six kills. Solo recorded her first career assist/dig double-double, collecting 31 assists and 13 digs in the victory. Leto and Rose each established a career high and led the team with 17 digs. Hayes and Solo both posted four blocks in the nightcap.
Cal U continues PSAC Crossover play tomorrow, Saturday, Sept. 20, when it travels to face Lock Haven and Millersville, which is hosting the event at Pucillo Gymnasium.
