Cal U handles Pitt-Johnstown, 83-60

Vulcans force 34 turnovers, collect 23 steals

CALIFORNIA (Dec. 3) – Sophomore guard Miki Glenn (Bridgeport, W.Va./Bridgeport) scored a career-high 29 points in leading the California University of Pennsylvania women's basketball team to an 83-60 win over Pitt-Johnstown in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West play Wednesday evening at the Convocation Center.

With the victory, the Vulcans improves to 6-1 overall and 3-0 in conference play. Meanwhile, Pitt-Johnstown falls to 5-2 this season behind a 2-1 league record.

Glenn finished in double figures for the sixth-consecutive game and has scored 20 or more points in three of the last four games. She shot 11-of-19 from the field and six-of-seven from the free-throw line. Glenn also added five rebounds and five steals while playing 37 minutes.

Senior Emma Mahady (Albury, Australia/Xavier) nearly recorded a triple-double on Wednesday, as she scored 16 points on 7-of-16 shooting and totaled nine rebounds and nine steals. Freshman Seairra Barrett (Center Twp., Pa./Central Valley) collected 11 points, seven rebounds (four offensive) and three assists and senior Kaitlynn Fratz (Accident, Md./Northern Garrett) tallied 10 points, three assists and two steals.

The teams traded points for the opening four minutes before Cal U went on a 16-3 run to take a 22-9 lead after a layup by Glenn at the 10:58-mark. The Vulcans connected on 7-of-11 of their shots and forced the Mountain Cats into five of their 20 first-half turnovers. Cal U extended its lead to 37-18 shortly before halftime with a 17-9 run over a 10-minute span. The Vulcans forced 10 turnovers during the rally as the Vulcans eventually took a 39-22 halftime lead.

In the initial four minutes of the second half, Cal U and Pitt-Johnstown traded points with the Vulcans building their lead to 45-28. Cal U extended its lead to 23 points at 64-41 after a  jumper with 9:45 to play. The Vulcans pushed their lead to a game-high 28 points after a layup by Glenn with 1:16 remaining.

For the game, Cal U shot 43.6 percent (34-of-78) despite making just one three-pointer in the game. Both teams finished with 42 rebounds, but the Vulcans scored 14 second-chance points after holding a 15-6 edge in offensive rebounds. Cal U forced 23 steals which helped lead to an 18-2 margin in fastbreak points.

In comparison, Pitt-Johnstown shot 40.4 percent (21-for-52) from the floor and 31.8 percent (7-of-22) from beyond the arc. The Mountain Cats were led by a team-high 14 points and rebounds from Nicole Carman off the bench, while two other players scored in double-digits.

Cal U continues PSAC West play on Saturday, Dec. 3, when it travels to Clarion at 5:30 p.m.
