CALIFORNIA (Nov. 24) – Trailing by as many as 16 points in the first half, the No. 22 Vulcans cut the deficit to one point before suffering a 74-66 loss to Findlay in non-conference play Tuesday evening at the Convocation Center.
With the loss, the California University of Pennsylvania women's basketball team falls to 4-1 this season. Meanwhile, Findlay improves to 1-0 on the year.
The Vulcans were led by a team-high 17 points from senior
Emma Mahady (Albury, Australia/Xavier) on 6-of-14 shooting. She added six rebounds, three steals and two assists. Sophomore
Miki Glenn (Bridgeport, W.Va./Bridgeport) scored 17 points on five-of-eight attempts, including three-of-five from beyond the arc, while adding five steals, four rebounds and three assists. Freshman
Shatara Parsons (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) added eight points on four-of-five and senior
Kaitlynn Fratz (Accident, Md./Northern Garrett) also scored eight points.
Cal U opened the game on an 11-4 run over a nearly four-minute stretch with the rally capped by a layup from junior
Lana Doran (Northamptonshire, England/Barking Abbey) after she collected an offensive rebound. After tying the game on a free-throw at 11-11, the Oilers responded with a 15-3 run to take a 26-14 lead at the 6:44-mark. Findlay pushed its lead to as many as 16 points at 32-16 with 4:50 left in the first half. Glenn made a three-pointer to cut the deficit to 32-24 at the 3:38-mark before the Oilers took a 40-31 halftime lead.
In the second half the two teams traded points before the Oilers held a 46-36 lead with 16:10 left to play. A layup by senior
Irina Kukolj (Harrisonburg, Va./Harrisonburg) pulled the Vulcans to within seven points, 47-40, at the 13:43-mark. Findlay stretched its lead back to 11 points on a pair of free-throws before Cal U responded with a 12-4 run over a 4:05 stretch that trimed the deficit to 57-54 with 6:55 remaining. The Vulcans connected on five-of-six shots from the floor, including two-of-two from three-point range during the run while forcing three Oiler turnovers. Cal U trailed by just 62-60 after a free-throw with just over four minutes left. From there, Findlay made free-throws to close out the game.
The Vulcans shot under 40 percent (24-for-65) for the game for the first time this season, while Findlay shot at a 58.1 clip (25-for-43) for the game, including a remarkable 65.2 percent (15-for-23) in the first half. Cal U out-rebounded Findlay by a 36-29 mark after finishing with an 18-4 edge in offensive rebounds. The comeback attempt by the Vulcans was keyed by a 15-4 margin in second-chance points.
Senior Lacey Kessler scored a team-high 13 points for Findlay on four-of-eight from the floor and five-of-five from the charity stripe. She added four rebounds and three steals. Freshman Haley Horstman and Margaret Wuebker each added 12 points for the Oilers.
Cal U continues non-conference play on Monday, Dec. 1, when it travels to face Shepherd at 7 p.m.
