Cal U holds off Mercyhurst, 3-2

CALIFORNIA (Oct. 8) – Junior Janelle McCann (Burlington, Vt./Tilton School) tallied a pair of first-half goals and senior Chelsea Crockett (Gilmanton, N.H./Gilford) scored the game-winning goal in the 74th minute on Wednesday evening, as the Vulcans posted a 3-2 victory over Mercyhurst in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) action at the Phillipsburg Soccer Facility.

With the win, the California University of Pennsylvania women's soccer improves to 6-2-2 this season with a 6-2-1 mark in league play. Meanwhile, Mercyhurst drops to 3-7-1 overall behind a 2-7-1 record in conference action.

McCann posted her first goal of the game in the fifth minute off a feed from Crockett. The Vulcans stretched the lead to 2-0 at the 13:13-mark when McCann registered an unassisted goal, her fifth goal of the season. Following halftime, Mercyhurst answered with the league-leading seventh goal of the year by junior Lauren Testa in the 56th minute.

Cal U added an insurance goal at the 73:52-mark when Crockett scored her team-best sixth goal of the season off an assist from senior Jordan Gray (Whitby, Ontario/Sinclair Secondary). The Lakers countered less than two minutes later when senior Janine Wong scored on penalty kick.

Sophomore Meghan Jayes (New Albany, Ohio/New Albany) established a career high with seven saves in the victory despite allowing multiple goals for only the fourth time in 20 career games. Mercyhurst goalkeeper Ellie McDougall finished with six saves after making five saves in the first half.

The Vulcans held a slim 16-15 advantage in shots after attempting 10 shots in the first half. Cal U also finished with an 8-6 edge in corner kicks after both teams took five corner kicks in the first half.

Cal U returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 11, when it travels to face Gannon at 5 p.m.
