Cal U falls in double OT at tournament, 2-1

Box Score

GREENVILLE, Tenn. (Sept. 8) – The Vulcans played a game into double-overtime for the second-straight day at the Tusculum Kickoff Tournament, falling 2-1 against Saginaw Valley (Mich.) on Sunday morning.

With the loss, the California University of Pennsylvania falls to 0-2-1 overall despite allowing just four goals in over 300 minutes. Meanwhile, Saginaw Valley moves to 1-1 after taking a split at the weekend tournament in Tennessee.

The Cardinals took a 1-0 lead in the 25th minute on a goal by senior Shelby Wright before the Vulcans responded less than three minutes later when sophomore Kaili Smith (Independence, Ohio/Independence) tied the game with her first career goal, 1-1. In the opening minutes of the second half, the Vulcans nearly broke the tie when a shot attempt by senior Stephanie Thompson (Queensville, Ontario/Huron Heights Secondary) deflected off the crossbar. Each team nearly took the lead in the closing minutes of regulation, as Cal U had another shot hit off the crossbar and a Saginaw Valley attempt deflected off the post.

In the second overtime, the Vulcans attempted three shots before the Cardinals recorded the game-winning goal on a shot by freshman Ashley Henderson at the 107:57-mark.

Junior goalkeeper Ashley Magruda (Belle Vernon, Pa./Belle Vernon) finished with three saves on Sunday and played nearly 218 minutes over the weekend after missing the season-opener. Cal U finished the game with a 22-15 shot advantage, including a combined 6-1 margin in the overtime periods.

The Vulcans return to Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) play on Tuesday, Sept. 10, when they travel to face IUP at 4 p.m.
