Vulcans split on day one at Ferris State

BIG RAPIDS, Mich. (Sept. 6) – The California University of Pennsylvania volleyball team earned a split at the Ferris State Invitational Friday, suffering a 3-0 loss to the host Bulldogs before claiming a 3-0 victory over Saginaw Valley State.

The split puts the Vulcans at 1-1 to open the season under third-year head coach Peter Letourneau.

Cal U opened the season Friday afternoon with a 3-0 loss (25-19, 25-17, 25-21) to Ferris State. Junior Laurel Miller (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) led the Vulcans with nine kills and chipped in six digs, while classmate Julia Muzy (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil/Liceu Franco Brasileiro) paced her effort with seven kills.

Freshman Kristen Scurpa (Sharpsville, Pa./Sharpsville) nearly registered a double-double in her college debut, posting nine assists and nine digs. Sophomore Samantha Rudy (Greencastle, Pa./Greencastle-Antrim) and senior Molly Delaney (Carmel, Ind./Westfield) each recorded 10 digs to lead the defensive effort. Delaney also had six kills in the loss.

The Vulcans rebounded from the season-opening loss to claim a 3-0 win 3-0 (25-20, 25-22, 25-23) over Saginaw Valley State (Mich.). Delaney led the Vulcan attack with eight kills and added six assists and four digs.

Miller had a balanced line of six kills, four service aces, five assists and four digs, while Muzy matched her six kills and added five digs.

Cal U resumes play at the Ferris State Invitational tomorrow, Saturday Sept. 10, when it takes on Washburn (Kan.) at 9:30 a.m. and Ashland at 2:30 p.m.
