Vulcans edged in opener by The Rock, 2-1

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. (Sept. 5) – The Vulcans fell to No. 17 Slippery Rock, 2-1, in the season- and Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC)-opening game for both teams Thursday afternoon at James Egli Field.

The California University of Pennsylvania women's soccer team falls to 0-1 in league play and 0-1 overall. Meanwhile, the Rock improves to 1-0 overall and 1-0 in the PSAC. The meeting was a rematch of last season's PSAC Championship and NCAA Tournament second-round game.

Slippery Rock broke a scoreless tie with 7:10 left in the first half when freshman Dara Demich knocked in a rebound to put The Rock up 1-0 heading into halftime.

Cal U evened the game up at 1-1 on a goal by junior Haley Henderson (Pickering, Ontario/Dunbarton) with an assist from sophomore Janelle McCann (Burlington, Vt./Tilton School) with 17:45 remaining in the game. The Rock netted the game-winning goal with 11:25 left on a shot from freshman Andrea Felix that was setup by a long cross into the goal box.

After Slippery Rock out-shot Cal U 5-2 in the first half, the Vulcans went on to out-shoot the Rock 9-3 in the second period.

Freshman Meghan Jayes (New Albany, Ohio/New Albany) made three saves in her collegiate debut, becoming the first true freshman goalkeeper to start for the Vulcans in over a decade.

Cal U returns to action on Saturday, Sept. 9, when it plays in the Tusculum (Tenn.) Kickoff Tournament. The Vulcans open weekend play when they face the host Pioneers at 1:30 p.m.
