INDIANA, Pa. (Sept. 28) – In the fifth-annual Coal Bowl, the Vulcans were unable to overcome five interceptions and were held without an offensive touchdown in a 20-7 loss at No. 7 IUP in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West action on Saturday afternoon.
With the loss, the California University of Pennsylvania football team falls to 3-1 overall and 1-1 in league play. Meanwhile, IUP remains unbeaten at 4-0 this season with a 2-0 mark in divisional action. The loss also snaps a six-game winning streak by the Vulcans in the series.
Sophomore
Cody Schroeder (Avon, Ohio/Avon) threw three interceptions in the first half before being relieving by classmate
James Harris (Woodstock, Ga./Etowah). Cal U was limited to just 230 yards of total offense, nearly 125 yards less than its season average, and its lowest total since the season-opener in 2011.
After a pair of punts to open the afternoon, Schroeder was intercepted near midfield on the second possession of the game for the Vulcans. IUP converted the turnover into points with a three-yard touchdown run by senior De'Antwan Williams with 6:59 left in the first quarter. Cal U looked to score on its next possession, advancing inside the red zone before Schroeder was intercepted in the end zone by senior Terrell Holloway with 48 seconds remaining in the first quarter.
The two teams traded field position until the Vulcans advanced deep inside the red zone with a first-and-goal from the 3-yard line before Schroder was intercepted in the end zone by Holloway, marking Schroder's third interception of the game – all by Holloway. Despite the three first-half turnovers, Cal U trailed just 7-0 at halftime after holding IUP to only 111 yards of total offense in the first two quarters.
On the first possession of the second half, the Crimson Hawks stretched the lead to 14-0 with a 35-yard touchdown reception by senior wide receiver Terrill Barnes. On its next drive, IUP moved into Cal U territory before senior defensive back
Dewey McDonald (Ranson, W.Va./Jefferson) returned an interception 80 yards for a touchdown with 3:12 left in the third quarter. It marked the second interception return for a touchdown by McDonald in as many weeks.
Both teams then traded field position before IUP mounted an 11-play drive in the fourth quarter capped with an 8-yard touchdown run by Williams with 4:18 remaining in the game (PAT blocked). Harris was intercepted on the next two Cal U possessions, as IUP sealed its first victory in the series since 2006.
Senior defensive back
CJ Townes (Joppatowne, Md./Joppatowne) and sophomore linebacker
Branko Busick (Steubenville, Ohio/Steubenville) both posted a team-high 10 tackles against the Crimson Hawks. McDonald and senior defensive lineman
Jalen Fields (Dalton, Ga./Dalton) each added eight stops and were among seven Cal U players with at least 0.5 TFL.
The Vulcans return to action on Saturday, Oct. 5, when they play a second-straight nationally-ranked opponent on the road, traveling to West Chester for a kickoff at 12 p.m.
