CALIFORNIA (Sept. 27) – The California University of Pennsylvania volleyball team opened Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Crossover play on Friday with a pair of 3-0 victories over Pitt-Johnstown and Lock Haven at the Convocation Center.
With the wins, the Vulcans improve to 8-3 overall and extend their winning streak to seven matches.
Cal U opened Friday morning with a 3-0 victory (25-12, 25-20, 25-9) over Pitt-Johnstown. Senior
Molly Delaney (Carmel, Ind./Westfield) led the team with a season-high 14 kills on a .464 hitting percentage and posted a double-double with 10 digs. Junior
Laurel Miller (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) and sophomore
Mary Lavery (La Plata, Md./La Plata) each collected nine kills and Lavery recorded six blocks and two service aces. Sophomore
Miranda Fouzie (Kingston, Ontario/Sydenham) established a career high with seven kills and added four blocks against the Mountain Cats.
Defensively, the Vulcans featured four players with double-digit digs. Sophomore
Samantha Rudy (Greencastle, Pa./Greencastle-Antrim) led the team with 16 digs, while Miller and Delaney finished with 12 and 10 digs, respectively. Freshman
Julie Henderson (Pickering, Ontario/Dunbarton) registered her first career double-double with 36 assists and 10 digs.
The Mountain Cats are first-year members of the PSAC and are led by head coach
Joanna (Nist) Haupt, who holds the all-time school record for kills at Cal U.
Cal U posted its seventh sweep of the season on Friday night, defeating Lock Haven by a 3-0 count (25-21, 25-22, 25-16). Lavery tied her career high with 13 kills on a .375 hitting percentage, while Miller finished with a double-double of 11 kills and 11 digs. Henderson engineered the offense with 32 assists, while also adding nine digs and two blocks.
Delaney led the team with a season-high 17 digs and added nine kills, while Rudy posted 14 digs against the Bald Eagles. Sophomore
Jeannie Catterton (Virginia Beach, Va./Kellam) finished with three blocks in both matches on Friday.
Cal U continues PSAC Crossover play tomorrow, Saturday, Sept. 28, when it hosts matches against Millersville and Shippensburg, beginning at 10 a.m.
