Box Score

CALIFORNIA (Sept. 24) – The Vulcans tied the single-game school record for goals on Tuesday night at the Phillipsburg Soccer Facility, as eight different players scored a goal in a dominating 9-0 win over Pitt-Johnstown in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) action.

With the victory, the California University of Pennsylvania women's soccer team improves to 4-2-1 overall with a 4-1 mark in league play. The Vulcans have now won four-consecutive games, including three via shutout, and have out-scored their opponents by an 18-1 margin during that span. Meanwhile, Pitt-Johnstown drops to 0-7 this season with every game against conference opponents.

Sophomore Janelle McCann (Burlington, Vt./Tilton School) was the only player to collect multiple goals against the Mountain Cats, finishing with two goals on four shot attempts. Junior Erin Hogan (Beaver, Pa./Beaver) recorded a career-high five points on Tuesday with one goal and three assists, which tied her career high.

With her performance, Hogan became only the second player in school history, and 11th in league history (first since 2009), to collect at least 30 assists in a career.  She is now tied for eighth in PSAC history with 32 assists, which is only three assists shy of tying the school record set by Kim Kottmeirer (1992-95).

The Vulcans started the scoring at the 3:40-mark when junior Haley Henderson (Pickering, Ontario/Dunbarton) scored her team-leading fourth goal of the year off assists from Hogan and senior Stephanie Thompson (Queensville, Ontario/Huron Heights Secondary). Sophomore Marissa Neifert (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cedar Cliff) scored on a header In the ninth minute following passes by Henderson and Hogan. Less than two minutes later, junior Chelsea Crockett (Gilmanton, N.H./Gilford) posted her third goal of the year off a feed from Hogan. At the 23:03-mark, junior Jordan Gray (Whitby, Ontario/Sinclair Secondary) scored an unassisted breakaway goal. Cal U added its final goal of the first half in the 34th minute when McCann scored her first goal of the game off a pass from freshman Marissa Antrilli (North Huntingdon, Pa./Norwin).

Hogan recorded her first goal of the season in the 54th minute off a pass from Crockett before sophomore Kaili Smith (Independence, Ohio/Independence) scored off a direct kick less than four minutes later. McCann added an unassisted goal in the 63rd minute and senior Christy Smyda (Irwin, Pa./Penn-Trafford) rounded out the scoring with her first career goal (unassisted) at the 84:38-mark.

The goalkeeper trio of freshman Meghan Jayes (New Albany, Ohio/New Albany), sophomore Kristin Baierbach (South Park, Pa./South Park) and senior Ashley Smyda (Irwin, Pa./Penn-Trafford) combined for the shutout on Tuesday. The Vulcans attempted 41 shots (23 shots on goal) in the victory, marking their highest single-game total since the 2010 season, while also preventing the Mountain Cats from taking a shot.

The Vulcans continue league play on Saturday, Sept. 28, when they travel to face Seton Hill in Greensburg, Pa., at 12 p.m.
