CALIFORNIA (Sept. 21) – The Vulcans held a 2-0 lead at halftime, but surrendered three-unanswered goals in the second half to drop a 3-2 contest to Davis & Elkins Saturday afternoon at the Phillipsburg Soccer Facility.
The loss drops the California University of Pennsylvania men's soccer team to 2-3 overall, while the Senators improve to 2-3-1 on the season.
Cal U took a lead less than four minutes into the match when junior
Chris Hunkele (Hampton, Pa./Hampton) notched his first goal of the season on a header to put the Vulcans up 1-0. Junior
Brad Colvin (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep) and senior
Scott Campbell (Erie, Pa./Harbor Creek) were each credited with assists on the goal. Cal U extended its lead to 2-0 when Colvin netted his first goal of 2013 off of a pass from Campbell in the goalkeeper's box.
Davis & Elkins got on the scoreboard early in the second half on a penalty kick goal by junior James Pucci to cut the Vulcan lead to 2-1 in the 48th minute. Pucci evened the score up in the 69th minute when he had a shot attempt blocked, regained possession and scored on his ensuing shot to tie the game, 2-2. Davis & Elkins took the lead when Pucci scored his second penalty kick goal of the game with less than two minutes remaining, giving the Senators the win.
The Senators held a 15-8 shot advantage over the Vulcans and an 8-0 edge in corner kicks.
Cal U kicks off Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) play when it hosts Pitt-Johnstown tomorrow, Sunday, Sept. 22 at 5 p.m.
