CAL U NOTES
• Cal U opens PSAC West play this weekend after posting a 45-10 victory in its home opener last Saturday over Kutztown. Meanwhile, Edinboro committed five turnovers last weekend that led to 27 points in a 47-35 loss against then-No. 15 Bloomsburg.
• The Vulcans scored 31-unanswered points, including 24 in the first half, and allowed only nine rushing yards in a 45-10 win against Kutztown. Sophomore
Cody Schroeder set a career high with four touchdown passes and passed for 267 yards with no interceptions. Wide receiver
Mike Williams posted his sixth career 100-yard game, finishing with 132 yards and one touchdown on eight receptions. Senior defensive lineman
Noah Taylor returned an interception for a touchdown and classmate
BJ Stevens broke the all-time school record after posting a career-high 3.5 sacks against the Golden Bears.
• The Vulcans and Fighting Scots are meeting for the 80th time with Cal U owning a 42-35-2 lead after winning the last eight games. Last year, Cal U posted a 24-14 victory over Edinboro under the lights at Sox Harrison Stadium in the first week of divisional play.
• After a 20-year career as an assistant coach at Edinboro,
Scott Browning is in his eighth season as head coach of the Fight Scots. He holds a 50-30 overall record and is one of only three Edinboro coaches to reach the 50-win mark. Browning has coached the offensive line, defensive backs and running backs, along with serving as the offensive coordinator, while a coach with the Fighting Scots.
• Edinboro returns 15 starters from a team that lost four of its last five games last year to finish 4-6 overall, the first losing season under head coach
Scott Browning. The Fighting Scots boast an experienced offense led by two-time All-PSAC West quarterback
Cody Harris, who has made 33 career starts. Harris accounted for 455 yards of total offense and five touchdowns (one rushing) in last week's loss to Bloomsburg. He ranks third in the PSAC, and No. 11 in the country, this season with 392.0 yards of total offense per game and leads all league quarterbacks with 118 rushing yards. Senior wide receiver
Marcus Johnson is averaging over 18 yards per reception after earning All-PSAC West First-Team honors last season. Junior
Ben Eisel leads the team and ranks seconds in the league with 19 receptions through two games. A preseason All-American, senior defensive back
James Jackson headlines a defense that returns seven starters from last year. Jackson has recorded at least four interceptions in each of the past three seasons and set a career high with 49 tackles (32 solo) last year. Junior defensive back
Veuntrae Robinson leads the team with 21 stops this year after making 73 stops last season. On special teams, Edinboro features first-year starters at both kicker and punter, while featuring a pair of explosive kick returners in Jackson and Johnson with the pair combining to average over 37 yards on seven kickoff returns.
• For the first time since 2004, the Vulcans failed to earn at least a share of the top spot in the preseason PSAC West poll. Cal U was selected fourth in the league poll by the coaches after losing its last two divisional games in 2012. Meanwhile, Edinboro was picked to finish sixth in the PSAC West after posting its first losing since 2002.
• Cal U has won its last eight, and 10 of its last 13, PSAC West-opening games. Over the last eight years, the Vulcans have won in dominating fashion in their PSAC West-openers, beating divisional opponents by an average of 40-11. Cal U has scored over 30 points in six of the last eight PSAC West-openers
• The Vulcans have already started a combined four true freshmen through the first two weeks. A native of Bethlehem, Pa.,
Tyler Peerson is the first Cal U true freshman to start on offensive line since the 2011 season, starting both games at right tackle. The tandem of
Blake Bell and
Anthony McPoyle have both started once on the defensive line and
Jordan Bowman, a product of Central Dauphin, earned a start in the secondary last week.
• In last week's victory, senior wide receiver
Mike Williams surpassed the century mark for the sixth time in his career. He finished the game with eight receptions for 132 yards, including a 41-yard touchdown late in the first half. Williams is averaging over 90 yards per game the last two seasons, including a 123-yard performance last year at Edinboro.
• Sophomore punter
Andrew Cerett ranks third in the PSAC through two games with an average of 41.6 yards per punt. He placed a career-high three of his four punts inside the opponent's 20-yard line last week. Cerett led the league in punting as a freshman last year and was selected to the All-PSAC West First-Team.
• Cal U has been held under 100 rushing yards in both games this season, averaging just 64.5 yards per game. The Vulcans have surpassed the century mark only four times in their last 10 games, which includes a pair of 220-plus rushing yard performances. In comparison, Edinboro is allowing over 270 rushing yards through the first two weeks after surrendering 383 rushing yards last week to Bloomsburg, which annually ranks among the top-10 in the country in rushing yards.
• In his career-best performance last week, senior linebacker
BJ Stevens broke the all-time school record for sacks and moved into second place in school history for career TFL. He set a career high with 3.5 sacks against Kutztown, which ties him for the single-game lead in NCAA Division II this year, and registered 3.5 TFL in a game for the fourth time in his career. The Gateway product ranks first in school history with 24.0 career sacks, eclipsing the previous mark of 23.0 sacks set by
Russ Frederick (1993-96). Stevens now has 33.5 career TFL and is on pace to surpass the all-time record of 39.0 TFL set by
Thomas Mulabah (2008-11).
• Since the 2005 season, Cal U has posted a 40-6 record (.870) at Adamson Stadium during the regular season. The Vulcans lost twice at home last year for the first time since the 2009 campaign.
• Sophomore quarterback
Cody Schroeder earned PSAC West honors after setting a career high with four touchdown passes, all to different receivers, against Kutztown. He threw for 267 yards on 20-of-28 attempts without an interception while playing just over three quarters. Schroeder, who ranks second in the PSAC this year in completion percentage, has passed for 475 yards and six touchdowns over his last five-plus quarters of action.
• For the first time in nearly three years (Nov. 13, 2010), Cal U returned an interception for a touchdown in last week's victory over Kutztown. Senior defensive lineman
Noah Taylor recorded his first career interception midway through the third quarter deep in Golden Bears' territory and returned it seven yards for a touchdown in last week's victory Kutztown.
• Sophomore wide receiver
Kowan Scott has demonstrated big-play ability over the last two years, averaging over 18 yards per reception. He finished with 80 yards and a touchdown on four catches against Kutztown last week. Scott has totaled 155 yards and two scores, including the game-winning touchdown last year, in two games against the Golden Bears.
• The Vulcans feature a pair of dual-sport athletes on their roster this year in sophomore quarterback
James Harris and senior defensive back
CJ Townes. Harris passed for 71 yards in his college debut at quarterback last week after starting 68 games for the Wake Forest baseball team from 2011-13. Townes, the team's top returning tackler from last season, has made eight stops through two weeks this year. He previously played two years on the Cal U basketball team, making 30 starts from 2010-12.
• Senior linebacker
Brian Justice nearly equaled his career high with 11 tackles last week against Kutztown. He ranks second on the team with 17 stops (nine solo) through two games. An All-PSAC West selection as a sophomore, Justice has recorded 12 tackles in a game twice in his career. The Flordia native finished with 55 stops (28 solo) last year while making only three starts.
