Cal U posts two sweeps in home tournament

CALIFORNIA (Sept. 13) – The California University of Pennsylvania volleyball team opened play at its two-day home tournament on Friday with a pair of 3-0 victories against Notre Dame (Ohio) and LIU Post in the Convocation Center.

With the wins, the Vulcans improve to 3-3 this season after opening the year in Michigan last week. Cal U is hosting a five-team tournament this weekend in both the Convocation Center and Hamer Hall.

In the afternoon match, Cal U earned a 3-0 victory (25-18, 25-10, 25-12) over Notre Dame. Senior Molly Delaney (Carmel, Ind./Westfield) and junior Laurel Miller (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) both recorded kill/dig double-doubles. Miller led the team and established a career high with 16 kills while hitting at a .448 clip. She also added 11 digs and two service aces against the Falcons. Delaney tallied 10 kills and tied for the team high with 12 digs for her first double-double of the season.

Sophomore Mary Lavery (La Plata, Md./La Plata) finished with seven kills and two blocks and classmate Miranda Fouzie (Kingston, Ontario/Sydenham) recorded six kills on a .455 hitting percentage. Freshman Julie Henderson (Pickering, Ontario/Dunbarton) directed the offense with a season-high 40 assists and collected three service aces in her home debut.

Defensively, sophomore libero Samantha Rudy (Greencastle, Pa./Greencastle-Antrim) tied Delaney for the team lead with 12 digs. Fellow sophomore Jeannie Catterton (Virginia Beach, Va./Kellam) finished with three blocks, while the Vulcans registered a season-best .352 hitting percentage.

Cal U returned to the court to collect a 3-0 win (25-14, 25-19, 25-16) against LIU Post on Friday night. Miller posted a team-best 13 kills on 45 attempts, while Delaney and Lavery added nine and eight kills, respectively. Henderson collected 37 assists in the sweep over the Pioneers.

Rudy set a career high with 18 digs and Delaney also reached double-figures with 10 digs. Sophomore Taylor Melidona (Rochester, N.Y./Irondequoit) recorded nine digs and three service aces, while Miller also tallied seven digs and four service aces.

The Vulcans conclude play in their tournament tomorrow, Saturday, Sept. 14, when they face Davis & Elkins in the Convocation Center at 2 p.m.
