CAL U NOTES
• Cal U returns to action on Saturday afternoon when it hosts Kutztown. The Vulcans opened the year last week in Michigan with 22-19 comeback victory at Hillsdale. Meanwhile, the Golden Bears suffered a 39-38 loss at Clarion following a failed PAT attempt in overtime.
• Sophomore quarterback
Cody Schroeder threw three second-half touchdowns, including the game-winning score with 50 seconds left, as the Vulcans posted a 22-19 victory at Hillsdale on Saturday. Schroeder finished with three touchdowns and a career-high 270 passing yards on 26-of-37 attempts. After being held scoreless in the first half, the Vulcans scored a pair of touchdowns in the final seven minutes of the game. Senior defensive back
Dewey McDonald tied his career high with 15 tackles and the Vulcans blocked a pair of first-half field goals by the Chargers.
• The Vulcans and Golden Bears are playing for the second time since the 1997 season. Cal U and Kutztown played every year from 1990-97 with the Golden Bears winning five-straight meetings before the Vulcans claimed a 48-45 victory last year.
• One of four first-year head coaches in the PSAC,
Drew Folmar spent the previous four seasons as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach for the Golden Bears. He mentored two-time PSAC East Offensive Player of the Year Kevin Morton and helped Kutztown post the winningest season in program history in 2010. Folmar was a record-breaking quarterback at Millersville and was selected to the Millersville Hall of Fame this year.
• Kutztown returns nine starters from a team that won six of its last seven games last year to finish 7-4 overall. The Golden Bears started a true freshman at quarterback last week in
Alec Werner following the graduation of Kevin Morton, who was the most prolific quarterback in school history. In his college debut, Werner passed for 394 yards and accounted for five touchdowns (one rushing) while completing 40-of-57 attempts. In the backfield, senior
Curtis Wortham returns after rushing for 932 yards and 15 touchdowns last year. Junior
Brett Fox is the team's leading returning receiver, as Kutztown lost its top three receivers from last year. Fox scored nine touchdowns and averaged nearly 16 yards per catch last year. True freshman
Alex Tonnie set a single-game school record with 17 receptions in his college debut last week. Defensively, the Golden Bears return several of their top tacklers from last season led by junior
Sam Dixon-Dougan who finished with 90 stops (36 solo). Redshirt senior defensive back
Alex DiNolfi, who suffered a season-ending injury against Cal U last year, returns after leading NCAA Division II with 11 interceptions in 2011. Wortham earned All-PSAC East First-Team status as a return specialist last year after totaling 718 return yards. Senior
Nathan Fehr returns as the team's primary punter after averaging over 37 yards per kick in 2012.
• For the first time since 2004, the Vulcans failed to earn at least a share of the top spot in the preseason PSAC West poll. Cal U was selected fourth in the league poll by the coaches after losing its last two divisional games in 2012. Meanwhile, Kutztown was picked to finish fourth in the PSAC East after graduating two-time PSAC East Offensive Player of the Year Kevin Morton.
• In the last 10 seasons, the Vulcans hold a combined 24-8 record (.750) against PSAC East opponents. Last year, Cal U posted its first-ever victory in nine meetings with Kutztown after the two teams didn't face each other for 15 years.
• In the season-opening win last week at Hillsdale, a total of nine players made their first career starts for Cal U. The defense featured four first-time starters against the Chargers, including two in the secondary - junior cornerback Corey Ford and senior safety
Dewey McDonald. The Vulcans featured a trio of first-time starters on the offensive line in Michigan with redshirt junior
Mike Price at left tackle, redshirt sophomore
Jeremy Seaman at right guard and true freshman
Tyler Peerson at right tackle.
• A quarterback and defensive end in high school, redshirt freshman
Desimon Green started at tight end in last week's season-opener. Green finished the game averaging 17.5 yards on four receptions, including the game-tying touchdown in the fourth quarter. He helped lead Clairton to back-to-back state championships in 2009 and 2010, while being selected the Class A State Player of the Year as a senior.
• In last week's season-opener at Hillsdale, Cal U was limited to just 37 rushing yards on 28 attempts. It marked only the second game since 2006 in which the Vulcans were held under the 50-yard mark (IUP, 2012).
• Cal U will be facing a first-year starter at quarterback for the second-straight game. Last week, Hillsdale senior Sam Landry passed for 359 yards in his first career start after entering the year with only 19 career attempts. Bloomsburg started a true freshman in
Alec Werner at quarterback in the season-opener. Werner, who was a standout at Bishop McDevitt in Harrisburg, threw for nearly 400 yards and accounted for five touchdowns (one rushing) in his college debut.
• Since the 2005 season, Cal U has posted a 39-6 record (.867) at Adamson Stadium during the regular season. The Vulcans lost twice at home last year for the first time since the 2009 campaign.
• In his fifth career start, sophomore quarterback
Cody Schroeder led the Vulcans to 22 second-half points and a last-minute comeback victory at Hillsdale. He finished the game with a career-high 270 passing yards while completing 70.2 percent (26-of-37) of his attempts and tying his career high of three touchdowns. Following a scoreless first half, Schroeder completed 20-of-27 attempts for 208 yards in the final two quarters. The Ohio native completed passes to eight different receivers in the season-opening victory.
• Last week, the Vulcans were held without a point in the first half for the first time in over two calendar years. Cal U managed only 69 yards of total offense and trailed 13-0 at halftime before out-scoring Hillsdale by a 22-6 margin in the second half. The Vulcans were last held scoreless through the first two quarters of a game on Sept. 1, 2011 against St. Cloud State.
• In last season's meeting at Kutztown, the two teams combined to pass for over 750 yards and six touchdowns with both starting quarterbacks surpassing the 300-yard mark. Cal U quarterback
Peter Lalich established a then-career high with 398 yards, including the game-winning touchdown to wide receiver
Kowan Scott with 1:02 remaining. The Vulcans and Golden Bears combined for nearly 1,000 yards of total offense with Cal U running 102 plays.
• Junior wide receiver
Trey Johnson led the team with eight catches for 73 yards in last week's victory at Hillsdale. Johnson, who made only one reception in the first half, sparked the comeback with a diving, one-handed touchdown reception midway through the third quarter. He also totaled 44 yards on two punt returns and registered his first rushing attempts since 2011. Johnson totaled nearly a combined 500 rushing yards from 2010-11 before converting to wide receiver last season.
• In his first game at Cal U, senior defensive back
Dewey McDonald led the team and tied his career high with 15 tackles (nine solo). He was a three-time All-WVIAC selection at Fairmont State from 2009-11 before missing last season due to injury. A preseason All-American, McDonald previously made 15 stops in the final game of the 2011 season for the Fighting Falcons.
• The Vulcans blocked a pair of kicks on special teams last week for the third time in their last five games dating back to last year. Late in the first quarter, senior
Darnell Harding blocked a 33-yard field goal attempt before sophomore
Kowan Scott blocked a 50-yard field goal two possessions later and midway through the second quarter.
• Offensive lineman
Jack Abercrombie, linebacker
BJ Stevens and wide receiver
Mike Williams are tied for team lead among active players with 12 consecutive starts.
