CAL U NOTES
• Cal U finishes the season this weekend following two-straight losses in divisional play. The Vulcans tied the score twice in the second half last Saturday before suffering a 23-20 loss against Mercyhurst. Meanwhile, Millersville allowed seven touchdown passes in a 66-7 loss at East Stroudsburg.
• Cal U suffered a 23-20 loss on a last-minute field goal by Mercyhurst despite tying the score twice in the second half. The Vulcans were held without a touchdown until late in the third quarter when senior
Trey Johnson scored on a blocked punt. Senior wide receiver
Mike Williams later tied the game with a 20-yard touchdown catch with 3:06 remaining before the Lakers made the game-winning, 22-yard field goal with 40 seconds left. Senior defensive lineman
Noah Taylor led the team with a career-high 11 tackles, while classmate
BJ Stevens finished with six tackles and 2.0 sacks in the loss.
• The Vulcans and Marauders are meeting for the second-straight year and only the third time since 1988. Cal U won the first seven all-time meetings before Millersville won three-straight times with its last win coming in 1986.
• One of four first-year head coaches in the PSAC,
Greg Breitbach spent the previous seven seasons, including the last five as offensive coordinator, at North Dakota. He helped transition UND from a Division II powerhouse to a conference champion at the FCS level. Prior to North Dakota, Breitbach was a coordinator at three schools, including offensive coordinator at Wisconsin-Stevens Point for three seasons.
• Millersville returns 10 starters from last year's team that finished 2-9 and seventh in the PSAC East standings with a 1-6 league mark. The Marauders enter the weekend ranked in the bottom five in NCAA Division II with 10.6 points per game and 237.0 yards of total offense per game. Senior running back
Ian Sadon ranks seventh in the PSAC with a career-high 875 rushing yards, which is the most by a Millersville player since 2007. The Marauders have primarily utilized three different quarterbacks this season with freshman
Corey Unger starting the last two games and passing for only a combined 150 yards. Junior
Brent Collins leads the team with 397 receiving yards and 38 catches, while junior transfer
Kevin Porter paces the team with three receiving touchdowns. After finishing second on the team in tackles last year, sophomore defensive back
Rasheed Johnson leads the team with 78 stops and two interceptions this season. Junior linebacker
Reggie Slaton has registered 74 stops, while senior defensive lineman
Doug Henninger has made 5.5 TFL with 2.0 sacks after not playing last year. On special teams, junior
David Coates is the active career leader in NCAA Division II with 2,373 kickoff return yards and 106 kickoff returns. He ranks fourth in the league this season with 581 yards on kickoff returns after earning All-PSAC East laurels as a return specialist in 2012.
• This weekend marks championship week for three of the four conferences in Super Region One. The region enters Week 11 with only one undefeated team and five one-loss teams, four of which will play a conference title game on Saturday. Super Region One consists of four conferences - PSAC, MEC (formerly WVIAC), CIAA and NE-10 - with no league earning automatic qualifiers to the post-season and only the top-six teams being selected to the NCAA Playoffs.
• For the first time since 2004, the Vulcans failed to earn at least a share of the top spot in the preseason PSAC West poll. Cal U was selected fourth in the league poll by the coaches after losing its last two divisional games in 2012. Meanwhile, Millersville was picked to finish seventh in the PSAC East after posting just two wins last season.
• The Vulcans have dropped to seventh in the PSAC in rushing defense this year at 139.3 yards per game after allowing over 450 rushing yards in the last two games. In each of its four losses this season, Cal U has been gashed for almost 200 rushing yards and allowed an opposing player to surpass the century mark. Millersville ran for 217 yards and three scores in last year's meeting at Adamson Stadium, but enters the final week of the regular season ranked 14th in the PSAC with 91.8 rushing yards per game.
• In just two years as a starter, senior
Mike Williams has become one of the most prolific wide receivers in school history. Last week, he became only the third player in school history to eclipse 150 career receptions and is only four catches shy of surpassing
Jim Kubina (1996-99) for second place on the all-time receptions list. Williams also moved into fourth place in school history with 2,190 career receiving yards and caught his 18th career touchdown. He leads the team and ranks sixth in the PSAC this year with 781 receiving yards on 50 receptions, which is tied for 10th in the league.
• Against IUP, sophomore
Andrew Cerett recorded the longest punt in NCAA Division II this year at 79 yards. The distance ranks as the eighth-best punt in all NCAA divisions this year and is the longest by a Cal U punter in over a decade. Cerett led the PSAC in punting as a freshman and ranks second this season with a mark of 42.8 yards per punt.
• Last week against Mercyhurst, sophomore quarterback
Cody Schroeder made his first start since Sept. 28 and the ninth start of his career. He threw a game-tying touchdown late in the fourth quarter before the Lakers made a last-minute field goal to win the game. Schroeder was also intercepted three times for the second time this year, becoming the first quarterback with multiple three-interception games in a season since
John Aitken (2002).
• Cal U recorded its seventh blocked kick (four field goals, two punts, one PAT) of the season last week against Mercyhurst when freshman
Garry Brown blocked a punt late through the third quarter. The Vulcans are tied for eighth in the country this season in blocked kicks and are one of 16 teams that have yet to allow a blocked kick. Cal U totaled six blocked kicks last year and has combined to block 17 kicks since the start of the 2011 campaign.
• Junior
Cody Nuzzo broke the all-time school record for points by a kicker last week against Mercyhurst. He also moved into fourth place all-time with 195 points behind 26 field-goals made and 117 PAT attempts, which is the most in school history. Nuzzo converted a pair of field goals last week to surpass
Jim Kraynak (1987-90) for second place in school history with 26 field goals in a career. He leads the team with 74 points this season on 32 PAT attempts and nine field goals, which is tied for third in the PSAC.
• This weekend marks the first time Cal U has traveled to Millersville since 1986, which also was the last win for the Marauders in the series. The Vulcans have won the last three meetings since then by an average of 28-plus points, scoring at least 30 points in each game. Last year, Cal U threw four first-half touchdowns passes en route to a 56-28 victory.
• Last week against Mercyhurst, senior linebacker
BJ Stevens recorded 2.0 sacks to increase his all-time school record to 28.0 sacks. He now ranks fifth among active players in NCAA Division II in career sacks following a breakout junior campaign when he led the country in sacks per game. The Gateway product enters the final game of his career just 0.5 TFL shy of tying the school's all-time record of 39.0 TFL set by
Thomas Mulabah (2008-11). Stevens converted to linebacker this year and ranks third on the team with 57 tackles (22 solo).
• Millersville enters the weekend with a minus-20 turnover margin, which is the third-worst total in all NCAA divisions this season. The Marauders have thrown 28 interceptions and lost 14 fumbles under first-year head coach
Greg Breitbach. Meanwhile, Cal U has posted a negative turnover margin in each of the last two years after leading the PSAC in the category four times from 2005-10.
• Senior defensive lineman
Noah Taylor recorded a career-high 11 tackles last week against Mercyhurst, eclipsing his previous high of nine stops set on Oct. 26. Taylor, the younger brother of former six-time, Pro Bowler
Jason Taylor, ranks fourth on the team and leads the defensive front with a career-high 52 tackles (19 solo) in his first year as a starter. He has totaled at least six tackles in five of the last six games and returned an interception for a touchdown on Sept. 14.
