CALIFORNIA (Oct. 30) – The California University of Pennsylvania men's soccer team kept their post-season hopes alive with a 2-1 win over Shippensburg Wednesday afternoon in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) action at the Phillipsburg Soccer Facility.
The win improves the Vulcans to 7-9-1 overall and 4-5-1 (13 points) in the PSAC, which puts them in a tie for seventh-place with Seton Hill and Bloomsburg. All three teams trail Gannon (15 points) for the sixth and final spot in the conference tournament. Meanwhile, the Raiders fall to 9-6-1 overall and 6-4 (18 points) in PSAC play.
Junior
Jeffrey Kyei (Tübingen, Germany/SIT Tübingen) put Cal U up 1-0 in the 25th minute with a direct kick goal from just outside the box that was darted towards the top-left corner of the net.
The Vulcans extended their lead just over 20 minutes into the second half when freshman
Elliot Taylor (Monaca, Pa./Central Valley) lined the ball off the crossbar and into the net from about 30 yards out to the left of the net. Shippensburg cut the lead to 2-1 with just under three minutes left in the match, but were unable to push in a game-tying goal to send the contest to overtime.
Senior
Alex Heston (Des Moines, Iowa/Roosevelt) set a career-high with eight saves to earn his second win of the season. Shots in the match were even with both teams attempting 12, but Shippensburg held a 6-4 advantage in corner kicks.
Cal U concludes the regular season Saturday, Nov. 2, when it travels to Millersville for a 5 p.m. match. The Vulcans will need a win and losses or ties by Seton Hill (at Pitt-Johnstown) and Bloomsburg (vs. East Stroudsburg), plus a loss by Gannon (at Mercyhurst) to clinch the final spot in the PSAC Tournament.
