Men's Soccer clips East Stroudsburg, 2-1

CALIFORNIA (Oct. 26) – The Vulcans held off East Stroudsburg 2-1 Saturday afternoon in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) action on Senior Day at the Phillipsburg Soccer Facility.
 
The win improves the California University of Pennsylvania men's soccer team to 6-9-1 overall and 3-5-1 in conference play. Meanwhile, the Warriors fall to 1-8 in the PSAC and 2-11-2 overall this season.
 
The Vulcans scored twice in the first half in a three-minute span, beginning with a goal from senior Christopher Karns (Mars, Pa./Mars) in the 27th-minute. Karns took a crossing pass from junior Jeffrey Kyei (Tübingen, Germany/SIT Tübingen) and buried the ball in the back of the net from inside the box.
 
Cal U tacked on another goal less than three minutes later when sophomore Anthony DiFrancesco (Bogart, Ga./North Oconee) scored on a breakaway set up by a pass from freshman Elliot Taylor (Monaca, Pa./Central Valley) to give the Vulcans a 2-0 lead with 14:16 left in the first half.
 
East Stroudsburg finally broke through with less than four minutes remaining in regulation to cut the Cal U lead to one, but the Vulcans weathered the Warrior attack and held on for the victory.
 
Senior Alex Heston (Des Moines, Iowa/Roosevelt) earned the victory in net for the Vulcans with a career-high five saves.
 
Each team attempted 13 shots in the match, but the Warriors out-shot Cal U 9-5 in the second half. Heston made three of his five saves in the second period to preserve the Vulcans win.
 
Five Cal U senior student-athletes were honored prior to the match for their contributions to the Vulcan men's soccer team including Heston, Karns, Scott Campbell (Erie, Pa./Harbor Creek), Gaby Deller-Borgono (Toronto, Ontario/Oakwood C.I.) and Kendall Herring (Washington, D.C./International School of Latvia).
 
Cal U is back in action Wednesday, Oct. 30, when they travel to Shippensburg. Kick-off for the match is scheduled for 2 p.m.
