CALIFORNIA (Oct. 25) – In a meeting of regionally-ranked teams, the No. 6 Vulcans extended their winning streak to 12 games on Friday afternoon with a 1-0 victory over West Chester in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) play.
With the win, the California University of Pennsylvania women's soccer team improves to 12-2-1 overall with a 12-1 mark in league play. The Vulcans, who were third in yesterday's initial NCAA Atlantic region rankings, have now recorded 10 shutouts against PSAC opponents this season. Meanwhile, West Chester falls to 10-5 this season behind a 9-5 record in conference action. The Golden Rams were slotted ninth in the NCAA Atlantic region rankings after winning nine of their last 10 games prior to this weekend.
The Vulcans recorded the only goal of the game in the seventh minute when junior
Haley Henderson (Pickering, Ontario/Dunbarton) placed a shot in the top left corner of the net for her team-leading seventh goal of the year with an assist from senior
Kelsey Russo (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel). Cal U was issued a pair of yellow cards near the box late in the first half and managed to prevent West Chester from evening the score before the break.
Cal U nearly added to its lead in the 62nd minute with a pair of scoring opportunities, as the initial shot deflected off the crossbar and the rebound attempt missed wide ride. The Golden Rams nearly forced overtime in the final minutes of regulation before sophomore
Lauren Pezzica (Brownstown, Pa./Conestoga Valley) preserved the shutout by redirecting a header from near the goal line.
Freshman goalkeeper
Meghan Jayes (New Albany, Ohio/New Albany) recorded a pair of saves on Friday, as senior
Ashley Magruda (Belle Vernon, Pa./Belle Vernon) received a red card in the last game. The Vulcans out-shot the Golden Rams by a 12-9 margin with nine shots in the first half, while West Chester held a 7-4 advantage in corner kicks.
Cal U continues its weekend homestand tomorrow, Saturday, Oct. 26, when it hosts East Stroudsburg for Senior Day at 3:30 p.m.
