CALIFORNIA (Oct. 2) – The Vulcans suffered their first home loss of the season with a 3-1 (27-25,22-25, 25-22, 25-22) defeat at the hands of the defending-Atlantic Region Champion Wheeling Jesuit Wednesday evening at the Convocation Center.

The loss drops the California University of Pennsylvania volleyball team to 11-4 overall, and snaps the team's 10-match winning streak. Meanwhile, the win improves the Cardinals, who are receiving votes in the latest American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) poll, to 15-3 on the season.

The Vulcans attack was led by junior Laurel Miller (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) who followed up her career-night performance against Fairmont State with a match-high 18 kills and nine digs in the loss. Sophomore Mary Lavery (La Plata, Md./La Plata) turned in 12 kills and 14 digs to pace Miller's effort.

Sophomore Samantha Rudy (Greencastle, Pa./Greencastle-Antrim) led the Cal U defensive effort with 24 digs, while freshman Julie Henderson (Pickering, Ontario/Dunbarton) finished with a match-high 46 assists in the loss.

Both teams fought back and forth in the match, as there were 16 lead changes and 32 tie scores, including 10 ties in each of the first three sets.

The Vulcans are back in action Friday, Oct. 4, when they host undefeated Clarion (14-0) in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West play. The match, which will be played in Hamer Hall, will begin at 7 p.m.
