Vulcans claim ninth-straight win, 2-1

BLOOMSBURG, Pa. (Oct. 12) – The Vulcans had their shutout streak snapped, but extended their winning streak to nine games with a 2-1 victory at Bloomsburg in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) action Saturday evening.

The win improves the California University of Pennsylvania women's soccer team to 9-2-1 overall and 9-1 in league play. Meanwhile, the Huskies fall to 3-8 in the PSAC and 5-8 overall this season.

After a scoreless first half, Cal U broke through with an unassisted goal from freshman Danielle Kearns (Gibsonia, Pa./Deer Lakes) just over five minutes into the second half to make it 1-0. Bloomsburg evened the score less than 10 minutes later, marking the first goal allowed by the Vulcans in over a month and snapped a seven-game shutout streak.

Senior Stephanie Thompson (Queensville, Ontatrio/Huron Heights Secondary) scored the game-winning goal with just under 20 minutes remaining in the match to give Cal U a 2-1 lead. Thompson headed the ball in off of a corner kick from junior Erin Hogan (Beaver, Pa./Beaver), helping the Vulcans secure a ninth-straight win.

Junior Ashley Magruda (Belle Vernon, Pa./Belle Vernon) made five saves in the victory, including two saves in the final four minutes of the match.

Cal U held a 14-12 advantage for the game in shots and attempted six corner kicks, while Bloomsburg did not attempt a corner kick in the match.

The Vulcans will look to extend their winning streak when they host Mansfield on Wednesday, Oct. 16, at 3 p.m.
