SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. (Oct. 1) – Leading 2-1 for most of the second half, the California University of Pennsylvania men's soccer team allowed a pair of goals in the final 16 minutes on Tuesday afternoon in a 3-2 loss at Shephard.
With the loss, the Vulcans fall to 3-4-1 overall with a 1-3-1 mark on the road. Meanwhile, the Rams improve to 2-6-1 this season after entering play on a five-game winless streak (0-4-1).
Cal U took a 1-0 lead in the 26th minute when junior
Chris Hunkele (Hampton, Pa./Hampton) scored his third goal of the year off a feed from classmate
Jeffrey Kyei (Tübingen, Germany/SIT Tübingen). The Rams later countered with a goal at the 31:09-mark and the teams entered halftime tied at 1-1.
The Vulcans broke the tie in the 52nd minute on a goal by freshman
Cory Kuzilla (Harborcreek, Pa./Harbor Creek) with an assist from junior
Jon Murphy (Pittsburgh, Pa./Central Catholic). After Cal U held the lead for 30-plus minutes, Shepherd tied the game at 2-2 at the 83:23-mark before scoring the game-winning goal in the 88th minute.
Junior goalkeeper
Mitch Mack (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep) finished with five saves while making his first start of the season. Both teams finished the game with 18 shot attempts and the Rams held a 7-4 advantage in corner kicks.
Cal U continues its seven-game road trip on Saturday, Oct. 5, when it travels to face Ohio Valley in Vienna, W.Va., at 3 p.m.
