FINDLAY, Ohio (Sept. 7) – The Vulcans opened play at the Findlay Invitational with a 3-2 comeback victory over Hillsdale (Mich.) on Friday afternoon before earning a 3-0 sweep against the host Oilers.
With the wins, the California University of Pennsylvania volleyball team improves to 5-1 this season.
Against Hillsdale, the Vulcans dropped the first two sets before rallying to a 3-2 victory (13-25, 21-25, 25-23, 25-23, 16-14). Senior
Meghan Franz (Cranberry Twp., Pa./Seneca Valley) led the team with 16 kills on a .432 hitting percentage and freshman
Mary Lavery (La Plata, Md./La Plata) collected 13 kills and eight blocks (one solo). Seniors
Ana Almeida (Belo Horizonte, Brazil/Colegio Promove) and
Brandy Harris (Bedford, Pa./Bedford) both added nine kills in the win over the Chargers.
Defensively, junior
Molly Delaney (Carmel, Ind./Westfield) established a career high with 24 digs in the five-set victory. Harris tied Delaney for the team lead with 24 digs, while sophomore
Laurel Miller (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) tallied 11 digs while playing three sets. Junior
Abbey Freund (Cottage Grove, Wis./Monona Grove) posted her second double-double of the season, finishing with a career-high 45 assists and adding 14 digs.
Against Findlay, Cal U collected its fourth 3-0 sweep (25-22, 25-17, 25-12) of the season. Almeida and Lavery both posted a team-best nine kills with Lavery registering a .818 hitting percentage. Senior
Kelly Fromknecht (Erie, Pa./McDowell) and Harris each added seven kills in the victory.
Freund and Fromknecht directed the offense with 18 and 15 assists, respectively. Delaney paced the defense with 10 digs, while Almeida and Freund totaled eight and seven digs, respectively.
The Vulcans continue play at the Findlay Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 8, when they play Wayne State (Mich.) and Urbana (Ohio), starting at 1:30 p.m.
