CAL U NOTES
• Cal U returns to action on Saturday night when it travels to defending-PSAC Champion Kutztown. The Vulcans opened the year with a 30-22 victory last week over then-No. 17 Hillsdale, who won the GLIAC title last year. Meanwhile, Kutztown recorded a 58-6 win against Saint Anselm (N.H.).

• Senior defensive back Rontez Miles broke up a potential touchdown as time expired on Thursday to help the Vulcans post a 30-22 win over Hillsdale in the debut of Mike Kellar as head coach. Senior quarterback Peter Lalich passed for 275 yards and four touchdowns, while completing 24-of-31 attempts. Junior wide receivers Trey Johnson and Mike Williams both finished with two touchdowns and six receptions against the Chargers. Miles led the team with 11 tackles, two pass break-ups and one forced fumble. Sophomore Jeff Knox, Jr. added nine stops and one fumble recovery in his first career start.

• The Vulcans and Golden Bears are playing for the first since time since the 1997 season. Cal U and Kutztown played every year from 1990-97 with the Golden Bears winning the last five meetings following a 30-30 tie in 1992.

• The reigning two-time AFCA Super Region One Coach of the Year, Raymond Monica is in his seventh season as head coach of the Golden Bears. Last year, he led Kutztown to its first-ever PSAC Championship while making a second-straight appearance in the NCAA Playoffs. Monica has posted a 39-30 record with the Golden Bears after an eight-year tenure as the defensive coordinator at Temple. He also spent six years as the defensive line coach at North Alabama from 1992-97 and was a member of the coaching staff on three-consecutive NCAA National Championship teams.

• Kutztown posted an 11-2 overall record, won its first-ever conference title, earned a second-straight berth to the NCAA Playoffs and finished the year ranked No. 13 in the AFCA Top 25 poll last season. The Golden Bears return 18 starters (nine offensive, five defense) from last year's team, highlighted by senior quarterback and two-time PSAC East Offensive Player of the Year Kevin Morton. Last week, he passed for 409 yards and six touchdowns and is on pace to become only the fifth quarterback in PSAC history to eclipse 10,000 passing yards in a career. An all-purpose threat, senior running back Josh Mastromatto is the team's top returning rusher and receiver from 2011 and totaled 143 yards (65 rushing, 78 receiving) last week. Junior Curtis Wortham led the Golden Bears last week with 120 rushing yards against Saint Anselm on only seven carries. Defensively, free safety Alex DiNolfi returns for his senior season after leading NCAA Division II and setting a single-season school record with 11 interceptions last year. He also finished third on the team with 68 tackles (48 solo) and added two fumble recoveries and one blocked kick in 2011. Four different Golden Bears led the team with four tackles last week, including sophomore defensive back English Peay. As a freshman last season, he finished with 66 stops (52 solo), two interceptions and 16 pass break-ups. Mastromatto excelled as a return specialist last year, averaging nearly 30 yards per kick return and scoring two touchdowns on kickoffs. Punter Nathan Fehr returns for his senior year after posting 31.5 yards on 49 punts with 14 kicks inside the opponents' 20-yard line last season.

• With its season-opening victory last week over nationally-ranked Hillsdale, the Vulcans moved up one spot in both the AFCA and D2Football.com Top 25 polls to No. 10. Cal U is now ranked in the top 10 of the AFCA poll for the first time since November 2010 (No. 7). Following its win over Saint Anselm (N.H.), Kutztown also moved up in both polls and is now ranked No. 11 by the AFCA and No. 15 by D2Football.com.

• This weekend's contest marks the second time in as many weeks in which Cal U has faced a Top 25 team. The Vulcans last opened a season with back-to-back games against nationally-ranked teams in 2008. Last week's win over then-No. 17 Hillsdale marked the program's first win over a Top 25 team since September 2010 at Saginaw Valley.

• In the last 10 seasons, the Vulcans hold a combined 23-5 record (.821) against PSAC East opponents. During that span, Kutztown is the only member of the PSAC East that has not played Cal U and is the only team in the league in which the Vulcans have never recorded a victory against (0-7-1).

• Former defensive back Tommie Campbell will open the NFL season on the active roster with the Tennessee Titans for the second-straight year. He was a seventh-round selection by the Titans in the 2011 NFL Draft and  played in 15 games, primarily on special teams, as a rookie last season. Campbell is currently listed as the second-string left cornerback on the Titans depth chart.

• Cal U and Kutztown were each selected as the preseason favorite in their respective divisions of the PSAC this summer. Both teams advanced to the NCAA Playoffs last season and were the only teams in the league to record double-digit victories in 2011. The last time Cal U faced the preseason favorite in the PSAC East was in 2008 (Bloomsburg, twice).

• Last season, the Vulcans became the fourth school in PSAC history, and the first since West Chester (2004-08), to reach the NCAA Playoffs in five-straight years. No program in the league has made six-consecutive berths in the NCAA Playoffs and IUP is the only school to have reached the postseason five-straights years on multiple separate occasions (1987-91, 1998-02).

• This weekend's game will feature two of the most prolific quarterbacks in the PSAC in Cal U's Peter Lalich and Kutztown's Kevin Morton, both were selected to the All-PSAC First-Teams in 2011. Last year, Lalich broke the single-season school record and ranked fourth in single-season league history with 3,725 passing yards. The reigning two-time PSAC East Offensive Player of the Year, Morton is on pace to become the school's all-time leader in passing yards this year after breaking the school's career record for passing touchdowns last week.

• As a freshman last season, Jeff Knox, Jr. appeared in all 13 games while splitting time at running back, defensive back and on special teams. Last week against Hillsdale, he made his first career start at safety and finished with nine tackles, one pass break-up and one fumble recovery. Knox, who led the team with 10 rushing touchdowns last year, also recorded five carries in short-yardage situations against the Chargers.

• Junior Trey Johnson made his first career start at wide receiver, and second overall, last week against Hillsdale. He set career highs with six receptions for 49 yards and two touchdowns after serving primarily as a return specialist and reserve running back in 2010 and 2011. Johnson also established a career high with 112 yards on kickoff returns to finish the game with 161 all-purpose yards, the second-highest total of his career.

• In the season-opening win last week over Hillsdale, a total of 10 players made their first career starts for Cal U. The defense featured seven first-time starters against the Chargers, including all four defensive lineman - junior Paul Everson, senior Jason Kates, freshman Kenny Smith and junior BJ Stevens. The secondary also featured three new starters in sophomore Jeff Knox, Jr. (safety), redshirt freshman Kenny Lewis (cornerback) and sophomore Terrell Roberson (cornerback). On offense, redshirt junior Nadir Brown (wide receiver) and junior Wayne Jones (left guard) made their first starts with the program after starting their careers at NCAA Division I programs. Freshman punter Andrew Cerett also made his debut at Cal U last week.

• Senior defensive back Rontez Miles is one of just eight players from NCAA Division II programs featured on the Senior Bowl Watch List. A First-Team All-American in 2011, he led the team with 11 stops (six solo) and recorded two pass break-ups and one forced fumble in last week's season-opener. The 2013 Senior Bowl is scheduled for Jan. 26 in Mobile, Ala.

• Last week, junior wide receivers Trey Johnson and Mike Williams each caught a pair of touchdowns against Hillsdale. It marked the first time since the 2009 NCAA Playoffs (West Liberty) in which two players scored at least two receiving touchdowns in a game.
